I recently purchased a Magnavox DVD player and found out that it DOES NOT play CD R s. Is there any way to disable or modify this copyright technology?

This is not a copyright issue but a hardware issue. Your player may not be of the dual-laser type (CDs and DVDs need two different, optimized lasers) that's why. The least you can do now is take it back to the store and exchange it.
