Technicalia Thread - for all technical questions!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Beal Family Forum : One Thread

This is a technical thread, for any and all questions about how to post, how to get an answer, how to add or disable an alert, etc.

For your convenience, I've added all of you to the "Alerts" page, scheduling you to receive additional topic postings immediately.

If you want to receive postings about answers to a topic, or question, you'll need to register yourself for an alert inside the particular topic's page. This way, if you're not interested in a thread, you don't have to pay any attention to

When you click on "ask a question", you can write anything you'd like in there. You can cut and paste from a word document that you've composed off-line - just remember to use < p > to separate paragraphs.

You can also place hot links in your "questions", as well as your "answers". Formatting with the full html address - < a h ref="http://www.fill in the blank"target="new">descriptive text here < /a > will suffice, though I've used bad syntax (spaces around the a's) in this example so that it won't turn into a link.

It's hard to make a mistake. If you post a couple of times and things look really funny, just let me know and I'll teach you how to fix it. Within a couple of posts, everyone should be an expert.

The basics for typing in word and then copy/paste into the submission area are:

1. Start each paragraph with a letter p encased by two carrot brackets < >.

2. If you want to just go to the next line but not start a new paragraph, type a br encased in brackets.

3. If you want to make a hot link, type a href="http;//www.blather,blather" encased in brackets and then - and this is VERY IMPORTANT - type the words you want to fill be highlit for the link, and then type /a encased in brackets. By putting a slash - "/" before the "a" at the very end, you end the link command.

That is absolutely all there is to it.

Oh, and do not forget to do a string of 15 letter p's, each one encased in brackets at the very, very end. I just keep a little copy-able blip in a word document and paste it into my posts.

What you'll find is that this is just a little cumbersome up front, but it ends up being very usable later on, so it's really worth the effort.

Last little bit -

If you just type straight into the submission box from your browser, you don't have to do any of the codes. However, you cannot do hot links unless you type in all the rest of the "p" codes, too, even if you're just typing right into the box.

Sigh. Software.

Hi Jeff,

You may find items at this URL helpful,
http://www.arsdigita.com/books/panda/

particularly the Q&A forum,
#6, Adding Images to Your Site
http://www.arsdigita.com/books/panda/images

This URL is from a greenspun forum and there are a number of posts about images:
http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-one-category.tcl?topic=HTML%20 Playground&category=Pics

This particular thread achieved posting an image:
http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=003ohd

Seems like you should type < Img SRC=" followed by the exact URL of the image you have stored, and that may do it...

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but let us know how you do it when you do. Also, if you mis-post anything, just type a response to it that says "Cynthia, please remove this" and I'll edit it out.

love,

cynthia

Cindy,

I was wondering how to attach photos with our entries. I've got some great shots of Justin running out to get the mail (in his boxers) during yesterday's blizzard.
