Merry Christmas and a Flash Question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I purchased my first M6 Classic two years ago and just recently added an M6 TTL. During the past two years I have frequented these parts non stop and have read almost every post that has been displayed. I wanted to take the time out during this busy Holiday season to personally thank each and every member of this board for the willingness to share their knowledge, information and experiences. I must admit that I have learned 90% of what I know about Leica photography from these pages and from each of you. For that I am grateful and very thankful. I want to wish each of you the most joyeous of Holiday Seasons. May they be happy and healthy and lead to many more years of Leica shooting and Leica conversations.

God Bless....

Here is my question which might be a dumb one but having just purchased the M6 TTL, I've read many posts here that recommend the Nikon SC17 Cord with the SF-20 to get off the camera flash capabilities. I have mounted my M6 to a small stroboframe and using the SC17 and the SF20 have achieved some nice results. My question is that since the Nikon SC17 seems compatible with the M6 TTL, does that mean I can use my NIKON SB25 on the bracket and still get TTL results? or will I be giving up the TTL features and have to shoot in manual mode?

I love to bounce the flash off the ceiling so that is the reason for wanted to try the SB25 ocassionally.

Thanks again to all of you... keep up the great work.

The Nikon cable happens to have contacts that line up well enough to use on the Leica, but the Nikon flashes have different electronics in them, and you can damage the Leica, flash, or both if hooked up TTL. There was a post here recently were someone noted that a Nikon flash started getting hot when mounted on an M6TTL.

Please don't try it! The contacts on the Nikon SC-17 just happen to be in the right place for the configuration of pins on Leica camera hot-shoes. That doesn't mean that the use of each individual pin for Nikon is the same as it is for Leica. If you want to bounce flash, you can use a Metz flashgun, which is 100% compatible with Leica M6 TTL with the Metz 3502 SCA adapter. If you don't want to go to that expense, use the SF-20 without the bracket, angled upwards. For convenience, you can use a tripod to support the flash because the SC- 17 has a threaded tripod socket on the end that connects to the flashgun.

Thank you both very much for the warning. That is why I wanted to ask the pros before trying. I am grateful for your heads up...

thanks, JT
