old time nosebleed "fixes". [preachin]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

The year was about 1953. The problem was a nasty nosebleed. I'd bled for 3 days and 3 nights until it finally stopped. Everything had been tried from "packin" my nose to everything else imaginable, including but not limited to---old wives tales. [ cold washrags on my neck, coins under my lip and even pourin cold water down my nose--!] After things had kinda straightened out I got to thinkin about something that might be used to stop those horrible things. The doctors didn't have any better ideas so figgered it'd have to be up to me if a "fix" was discovered. I got to thinkin about green persimmons and how they "puckered" up ya'lls mouth when et. Asked mom what it was that caused that. She didn't know the word but said something about "alum" doin the same thing. Alum was used to put on cuts to kinda shrink up the wound so it would stop bleeding and a bandage could be applied. Everybody back then had powdered alum for that purpose and we were no different. I got a little spray bottle, dumped out the nose spray-mixed a little alum in water and put in the spray bottle. Next time I had a nosebleed----it worked! Shrunk that dude up so it stopped bleeding immediately! Now, if this dumb old hillbilly--as a dumb hillbilly kid of about 10 years old, could come up with a simple thing like that--why didn't the big drug companies? I STILL don't know why it wasn't done back then. I don't know if anything has been made in the last 50 years or so that will do the same thing as alum, but doubt it very much.

I finally outgrew those horrible years of terrible nosebleeds and now very seldom have'm. I did have one about 3 weeks ago but it quickly stopped. It was caused by cold weather and breathin through my big old ugly nose too much.

Now, if'n anybody decides to market this little product and it does well---well---send me some cash. I can use it to further the Work of Almighty God in the world. Precious souls are suffering needlessly every day because of poverty. Little dudes and dudettes goin without food, clothing and even heat when Americans throw out enough food, cloths and waste enough money each day to feed and clothe an army.

Almighty God will not hold us blameless for neglecting our precious little ones He has allowed us to take care of. I guess that's where I get this huge soft spot in my old heart for the little ones. We are to be good caretakers of what He has allowed us to have charge of. Besides not wanting to offend Him---I just love the little ones and am most saddened when they're mistreated. Even when I was livin like a heathen the best way to get on my "bad" side was to harm the little ones. It was not a good idea to get on my "bad" side either.

Well anyhow, if this information can help anybody with nosebleeds---good! If not--keep tryin! I wonder if this would work on cancers? old hoot. Matt.24:44

Hey Hoot! I will certainly check this out. My son had been bothered with bad nosebleeds for several years. He had silver nitrate swabs stuck up his nose, I had to pack it with cotton balls soaked in epinephrine, he had it packed and finally two surgeries to get it stopped. I was such a nervous wreck. I get real faint at the sight of blood. He still gets them occasionally, but not real bad. It usually stops with a little pressure. This is something worth checking out. Thanks Hoot.

I used to suffer from terrible nose-bleeds when I was a child. Sometimes it would bleed for hours. They used to try everything to stop it. I am glad that doesn't happen to me any longer!

2 of my kids get nose-bleeds, but not too bad. I have them gently blow their noses and there are usually big blood clots. Once these clots come out it quits, but if the clot doesn't come out it just keeps bleeding. Sorry for those who are squemish, but you might try having the child gently blow their nose and see if it is a blood clot.

I suffer from sever nose bleeds, but only in the winter. I know it has something to do with the cold. I have tried everything. I will bleed for hours. The other night I was so tired I just stuck my head in the toilet and tried to hold my nose with my eyes closed. I have never tried alum on my nose bleeds. When I was in beauty school I kept some in my drawer for if I cut myself. It always stung so bad and brought tears to my eyes I was very careful not to cut. I can't imagine the sting in my nose!!!If the next one is bad I might have to try it though. God BLess

Good idea, hoot. Whenever I get a nosebleed, I stand with my head leaned back, my index finger pressed under my top front lip, pinch my nose shut with the other hand, and try to think calming thoughts.

I've never had a really bad one like you relate, that must be really scary. I think they make some kind of nasal ballon (insert into nose, blow up inside) for those really serious nose bleeds. Your idea sounds much better.
