Will the 380ex speedlite work instead of the 550ex ?

yes. ex speedlites all have e-ttl. the 550 is more powerful though. it also has some slave capability.

Yes, the 380EX will work but a better alternative would be a 420EX. This allows both horizontal and vertical swivel of the flash head and also the flash 'red-light' low light focus assist will be active over all three focus points rather than just the centre point that the 380EX will manage. The D30 has the 'white light' focus assist that some people find distracting/annoying.
