Read Poe's "The Poetic Principle" and "the Philosophy of Composition". His style is dark romantic, favoring short poems, experimental, musical, unifed in mood, sorylike, restrained but nearly modern type of symbolism. Art for art's sake and not "message" poetry. The preminence of song and sound and symbol in conveying the emotion. Did not want to be constrained to raitional styles too much and often came perilously close to over simple ballads and repetitive rhymes(until you let yourself go deeper into the poem).
