1. We didn't play very well. If we played that game ten times we'd lose at least seven. I know, you don't care.

2. Our chances of getting stuffed by Leeds have just gone up a notch. On the other hand, we've won without playing well again so maybe we're due a good footballing (not just hard-working) performance.

3. Lua Lua is a muppet. I'm sorry, I seem to be his only detractor on here, but all the guy can do is dribble. Unfortunately in the Premiership you also need to pass, shoot and think. LLL just goes on tricksy runs until he has the ball taken off him. Temuri in disguise?
4. Pound for pound, Andy O'Brien is the best signing this club has made since Rob Lee. (Nobby and Shay not far behind, mind).

5. Bellamy wants his jaw wiring shut. They shouldn't appeal against the sending-off, they should fine the idiot for getting booked in the first place. I don't buy the argument (a la Cantona) that he'd lose something from his game if he kept his mouth shut, because CB only ever gets into dissent trouble when the ball's out of play.

6. For all his experience, Dabizas still needs to learn to play to the whistle. You don't look at the ref and claim handball when the ball's pinging around your f***ing six-yard box.

7. We are top of the league!

Sorry Dan normally i'd agree with you totally about Lua but not today....he made a big difference yesterday, it was his corner for our first and his pass for our 3rd.....neither of them were dribbles :))

lll is one of those players who needs a bit of experience in the team, a few shearer bollockings and a goal or two. he has pace and skill...lets nurture it

1. True 2. True, but we do have a chance with all Leeds' problems at the moment 3. Nah, sorry buy Lua Lua has been superb this season, he changes games - look at the last 2 matches scores when he came on. He has a hell of a lot of skill and granted he needs to learn a lot but he is still way better than Ameobi. I haven't seen Ameobi have one good game for us yet. Both players need to learn to score more goals but I really don't see LLL as a striker - more of a Dyer role. I can see LLL becoming a fab player - at the same time I see Ameobi becoming one of the worst strikers in years. LLL made some bad mistakes last night but at the same time lifted the team and made some great runs AND setup that last goal.

4. For the money yes but we shouldn't be looking at good buys pound for pound - there are a lot better CBs around that we need. The 3 or 4 we have got at the moment have their days but are not as consistant as the likes of Stam, Southgate etc etc

5. We should appeal - it will get put down to a yellow so he'll still be suspended but not for 3 games.

6. Very true, I've said the same thing for years.

Didn't Bellamy get the red for violent conduct ? So it made no odds that he'd already been booked for mouthing off, he would have been off anyway. I think the decision was very harsh but Ashley Cole made such a big deal out of nowt. In contrast to Shearer pleading to the ref to not send Parlour off.

1. Thought we did ok when it was 10v11! And even 10v10 I thought we were ok

2. Hopefully, other sides will show us some respect. Arsenal tried to heap on pressure, get the goal and then hit on the break. Worked at first, but the added attitude of bullying us out of the game tripped them up. Ha ha ha :-)

3. Lua Lua is a muppet. Possibly Gonzo, but Fozzy Bear is probably a closer match.

4. Aye, but Henry gave him all sorts of trouble. Hughes was also looking stretched at times.

5. Yep

6. Just be thankful Arsenal didn't choose to run at him a la Owen!

7. Really? You're kidding aren't you? ;-))

Lua Lua is a muppet

You will have to eat those words before you are much older.

Temuri in disguise? I rest my case. Ketsbaia was one of our best players during some bad times at SJP. He always made things happen when he came on (similar to LLL who won and took the corner that we scored from against Arse). TK scored some hugely important goals including the one that got us into the CL to play Barca.

AND our last winning goal in London...

Lomana Lua Lua and Robert entered the increasingly frenetic fray. Immediately Newcastle's Zaire-born striker, stung by the match announcer's disrespectful pronunciation of his surname, made his mark.

woz this aboot?

I think the announcer said that Robert and Kermit were coming on ...

Players have different roles.

LLL is without doubt a superb player to bring on as a sub, either to finish the opposition off, or to lift the support and the side. He has enthusiasm and a desire to go forward. That is fine in a a sub who has been given those instructions. We would never start a game with him in the XI as that attitude is not (always) correct for 90 minutes.

Distin, was a superb choice for sub for Dyer. Big, strong attacker of the ball in the defence. Brilliant. BUT he can play a whole game as those attributes are relevant throughout a game.

Jonno, I really do hope I am proven wrong, but despite LLL's twinkle-toed trickery (beat 2 midfielders nicely) he still lost the ball. ok, he won the corner and gave O'Brien a ball to tuck away - BUT had Henry not just stopped running, it would have been easily cleared away. Ifs and buts, I know...churlish to criticise and pick holes in a famous win...

Perhaps the real difference between LLL and Ketsy is that Kets scored goals - some important ones at that. Time will undoubtedly prove me very wrong.

Bobby, we were giving the ball away anyway. At least Lua Lua looked like he might make things happen before giving it away, and the way he draws the tackles is worth the risk AS LONG as he does it near their penalty area not in the midle of the park. We often worry overly about possession, and go for the innocuous OPTA pass, if I can call it that. That's fine if the build up leads to something positive, but against a strong midfield like last night that sort of passing was just being mopped up.

Thing is, everyone, Arsenal have World Class players who will embarrass other World Class players in the World Cup. Our defenders may have had their troubles last night but World Class defenders and World Class goalies like Blanc and Barthez got shown up even more by them a couple of weeks ago.

1. I think you’re being harsh, in an always difficult fixture we showed character, grit, and lots of hard work. We earned our luck.
2. Now could be a very good time to play Leeds all things considering.
3. Lx3 did lose possession a few times but his runs troubled Arsenal and helped us regain the initiative. By no means the finished article but mightily useful for the bench
4. Yes he is looking a absolute snip
5. Couldn’t agree more, he’s got to learn to shut it. His red was a joke though.
6. Dab’s concentration still sometimes seems to go AWOL in big games, still our best CB IMHO
7. Wonderful isn’t it.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2001

1. We won in London.
2. We won on the telly.
3. Shearer scored at Highbury.
4. WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2001

sorry steph, could you go over that again please¿

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2001

I'm haven't been a big fan of Luax2 - in fact I've called him a circus act - principally because he hasn't seemed to have a fooballer's attributes. Until recently he has come on and just ran around trying to beat one player after another until he lost the ball. He never looked up and couldn't pass the ball to anyone because he had no awarenesss of where they were.

However, he came on on Saturday and played a terrific 40 yd pass to Solano that resulted in Bernard's goal. That made me take notice. Last night, he hit our first decent corner for about three months to the unmarked O'Brien to score, and then hit the pass of the season to release Robert for our third.

So, I ask myself, what the hell is going on? Well, perhaps, just perhaps, our much maligned coaching staff are beginning to have an impact on this particular 'rough diamond'. Let's keep a watch on this situation and see what develops.

David Geddis?

5 matches unbeaten in the League, 3 wins on the trot?

Could he really make such a big impact, or is BR's hard work finally reaping it's rewards?

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2001

Re LLL, my view is that if the raw talent is there, then the coaching has every chance of making the player a great. If the talent is not there then coaching could do little more than create a system player, good squad member.

LLL has masses of raw talent, which has been evident since he first came on for us. Sure there is much more for him to learn but I for one will be surprised if LLL doesn't make it. Every time the ball is at his feet there is a tension in the air. None of the other 21 players know what he'll do next, he takes men on, he draws defenders towards himself, he makes things happen. I'm impressed with his self- confidence in taking on players. I'm sure he'll make it as long as this natural brilliance isn't coached out of him.

Love him to bits - he's a natural Toon player.

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2001

I really think it's too early for Geddis to have had any meaningful impact. However, I really do believe that losing Wadsworth had significance - perhaps simply by causing BR to get more closely involved in the coaching again.

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2001

Clarky - your first para (previous posting) is exactly what I've been saying about LLL. Granted, he's now supplied a couple of key passes, so I take that back, but I still think his problem is speed of thought - I don't think he's yet mentally up to speed with Prem football, which is why he generally dribbles himself into a mist, and why I still feel his sub appearances flatter to deceive. Nevertheless he's undoubtedly got a bit of skill and flair and I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops. For now though...he's a muppet!

Very very harsh on LLL given that he got half an hour against Arsenal and set up 2 goals. The lad always gets thrown on when we're behind and struggling & the opposition always have men behind the ball. We're usually losing because of our lack of movement in midfield and up front & that doesn't magically change when he comes on. As often as not when he gets the ball there isn't an obvious pass for him and there are numerous opposition shirts in front of him. A less skilful player would just lump the ball forward and not be criticised. He tries to take people on, gets away with it sometimes and makes things happen sometimes. On the rare occassion where he gets to play against sides who are attacking us and as a result leaving a little bit more space he's looked good and has played some quality balls. Leeds last year springs to mind, as does Arsenal. I absolutely agree that he's got a lot to learn, but so do Bellamy and Ameobi. Give the lad a run in the side if Bellamy's suspension isn't overturned and we'll see what he can do - he may struggle but at least we won't be writing him off based on a few subs appearances where he's thrown on as a desperation measure.

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2001

In the Mag last month, John Carver said that his problem last year was that he was terrified..the whole PL, being in the same team as Alan Shearer was too much for him but that he's getting more comfortable now. He came to football very late remember...

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

So Ameobi has scored 5 goals this season and is "one of the worst strikers" people have ever seen. Must have ducked the Worthy Cup and Inter Toto games as he's had precious little opportunity outside that. A bit like Bernard really. How do you judge players who don't get the chance to play?

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

I'd have to agree there, Softie. I'd also have to say that we won the last two games against Leeds largely because Rio Ferdinand didn't have a clue what to do about him. On the other hand, he missed a sitter at Bolton that was almost breathtakingly more difficult to miss than to score from (in fact, the fact that Henry missed a similar sitter at Southampton on the same day) is the only reason it hasn't been put on The Premiership credits. This was a great chance for him to put his name on the scorers' chart and he f....d up badly so he'll generally have to do better with the chances that do come his way.

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

A bit like Kanu and Bellamy then :-)

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

In fairness, I've never seen either of those two missing sitters quite of the Shola ilk...but I see what what you mean.

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

I thought Rio Ferdinand was injured for the two Leeds games (?)

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

Just checked, Rio missed the game at Elland Road but not at SJP.

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

I distinctly remember Henry Winter commenting on Shola being like an octopus and making a twat of Rio at SJP (the octopus image being one he took up again in the InterToto). Actually, I can't remember who their CH against Shola was at Elland Road although it was the best away game of my entire season...which says something. If I remember correctly, Rio had knacked his knee getting out of bed ot off a sofa, hadn't he?

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2001

Yeah, Rio injured his leg while "watching the telly"

Whether what he was watching had anything to do with him knacking his leg is another matter entirely.
