UV filter for 50 Summilux M lens (43mm)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I recently purchased a 50 Summilux M lens that is the version prior to the current one. (Solms model, but without the built-in lens shade.) Therefore, it will still accept the old XOOIM (12521) lens shade. However, that shade will only fit when I use one of the old Leica UVa filters with the shallow ring. I would prefer to use a modern, multi-coated B+W filter, but then the hood can't snap into the groove on the lens barrel because the B+W filter ring is too deep. Any suggestions? Thank you.

John put a thin rubber band in the groove. The teeth of the shade will then bite into it and fit tightly also the shadee will not rotate around the lens barrel.

Two possibilities, in order of preference:

1. Have a camera repairman swap the B+W glass into the Leitz mount.

2. Grind off the front threads of the B+W mount.

3. Get a rubber 43mm generic hood.

Possibility number Four:

Skip the UVa filter. Who needs it, except maybe on mountain tops?
