Autofocus problems with Sigma 28-105 in Canon Elan IIe

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

Hello,

I have a Canon Elan IIe with 28-105 Sigma lens for over 3 years now. Right now it developed a problem. Only once or twice it actually does the auto focussing. Most of the time the lens do not auto focus. I can hear the motor trying to move the lens, but it cannot. When I do the foucssing manual, the camera chimes when picture is in foucus. The rotating rings are smooth on rotating it manually(so, I don't think any dirt is inside). Does anybody experienced this problem or know where to look for solutions. Answers are appreciated

Sounds like the lens is broken. Find out the cost of repair and then you can decide if its worth fixing, or is it just better to replace the lens.

My 5 year old Canon 28-105 is still working fine, and currently cost about $220 new.

Hector, I'm interested in anything you've done with the lens since your post. (now 6 weeks later) I have the SAME problem, and my guess is that some of the autofocus mechanisms have become dirty or stuck to the motor, despite the smooth manual focusing. However, when I "assist" the AF by slightly forcing focus in AF mode it will work. Just sticky. I had an estimate of $110 to $120, money I would rather sink into a Canon USM lens. I may attempt to repair myself. Any info you can provide would be great. Thanks.

I also have a Canon Elan IIe with a 28-105 Sigma lens for over 3 years now. In the last year, I had it stored away. Recently, I decided to take it out and play around with it. However, the auto focus is not working too. This must be a defect of some sort because I know the lens properly handled and stored away.
