EOS 7/7E Manual Focusing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

The Canon EOS 7/7E Instruction Manual states "If you focus manually while you hold down the shutter button halfway, the focusing point(s) achieving focus will flash in the viewfinder and the in-focus indicator will also light".

Does anyone know if this will work with the 1.4X and 2.0X extenders? Does it work with Eye Control?

Thanks

why don't you experiment? i see no reason why it would not. as for with eye control, what exactly do yo mean? i don't think eye control auto focus is used when you are focusing manually... drugs are bad.

The extenders don't change how the AF indicators work. But...

AF and manual focus indication will work with the 1.4X TC as long as the original lens is f/4 or larger. AF and manual focus indication will work with the 2X TC as long as the original lens is f/2.8 or larger. Smaller apertures (larger numerically) will disable AF along with the AF indicators.

If you have a ring-type USM lens with FT-M you may lock AF by depressing the shutter button halfway and touch up focus manually. It doesn't matter if you use ECF, manual AF sensor selection or auto sensor selection.

You should practice doing it in your living room before going out in the field. Don't manually focus during AF operation. Wait until the AF confirmation (red flash).

Beware, the EF 28-90 USM kit lens is not a ring-type USM lens.

I wish to clarify the confusion from Peter's explanation in the previous post. Unfortunately, this explanation is quite long.

The feature that Dave describes is called "focus confirmation". With the lens set to manual focus, you activate the autofocus sensors and computer by pushing the shutter button halfway. If focus is detected under any of the Elan 7E focus sensors, the "in focus" lamp will light, and ANY sensor that has achieved focus will blink. Eye control or manual AF point selection do not matter since the lens is in manual focus and AF is disabled!

Focus confirmation does not work when the lens is set to autofocus. So, if you invoke Full-Time-Manual focus (which is different from focus assist), you can wait until the camera finishes finding focus before you manually shift the focus. Otherwise, the camera might try to automatically correct your manual override.

The confusion arises because holding the shutter button halfway is always needed for "focus confirmation", and sometimes needed for FTM. The difference is that "focus confirmation" applies when the lens is in manual focus, and FTM applies when the lens is in automatic focus. There IS one exception, and that is when using autofocus in "GREEN" FULL- AUTO mode, when the Elan 7E automatically does "focus confirmation" right after achieving focus. This topic was discussed in great detail at the Elan 7E Group.

The Elan 7E will only attempt "focus confirmation" if an EF lens is mounted, and if the reported aperture supports autofocus. So if you use a 1.4x or a 2x teleextender, the resultant aperture must be f/5.6 or wider.

Does this explanation help?

Cheers
