MILITARY LEICA

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hello and seasons greetings to you all, Apart from being a dedicated Leica user, now retired,I use my 111g and M3 most days and regularly shoot off two rolls of film each week,my pet Leica subject is that of the Military Leicas of WW2 and would welcome contact with anyone else who shares this field of history. I am currently researching the Leeica 111D (111c with self timer)and would be grateful for any specific information on any known example. I do have my own 'small' website at:- http://mysite.freeserve.com/leicaenthusiast Regards and best wishes,David

Here's an interesting WWII anecdote. I read it years ago someplace, and have no idea if it's true. Here Goes.

After Germany surrendered (I guess it must have been after) some American big shots walked into Dr. Leitz's office and demanded the plans for the Leica. Dr. Leitz opened the vault and handed over the plans. Some time later, the Americans retuned with the complaint that they tried to build the Leica from the plans, and the results were lousy.

As the story goes, Dr. Leitz just smiled and explained to them that it takes more than plans to build a Leica. They could steal his plans, he said, but not the expertise and dedication to perfection of the workers in the Leica factory; and that was what had been lacking in the effort to duplicate the Leica elsewhere.

I think I might have read it in an old issue of Leica Photography.
