greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Keith Lay set up a night O' practice at SMP Thursday night (12/13). It was a lot of fun. Six of us found our way aorund the course -- Dick, Gene, Dan, Eric, Mary and I.

Check out the course and my routes and comments at:

Unlike Mike, I wanted to test my headlamp and what my old eyes could see. I went W first then used the trail north to the campground then turned right (E) up the main reentrant. On the trail N I found the lamp light wasn't enough to see more than a 10 ft in front of m; reading the map at night is no longer a quick thing (need to stop, readjust the lamp and stare for awhile). Probably got onto the right reentrant near #1 but didn't go high enough. Went over 1 more reentrant NE, then saw Mary's lamp coming to #1, then Mike came.

Finally got in agroove for night O to #2. Over the ridge and running on a bearing. Running very slowing under the powerline to #3, Dan zoomed past at a normal running pace. From 3-4, Mike's route showed he was out in the open along the forest edge; I left straight from the control - not going too fast. #5 was deep, deep in the ditch. For safety's sake I recommended to Keith not to set a control at night near a potential hazard. Didn't blame Mary for doing a "wave by." It was a most bodacious adventure, Keith! Lots of fun and hope others will give it a try. I was the slowest, but I'd do it again if I were even slower.
