The book "Southern Railway Varnish" would probably be a good starting point.

Jason, I agree about the book "Southern Railway Varnish". You may be able to get a copy from the Spencer Shops museum store. It covers Southern passenger operations from 1964 to 1979. You can learn something about the trains in their earlier incarnations from this book, too. Very little exists that deals specifically with Southern passenger service in earlier years. There don't seem to be any books like the ACL or L&N passenger service books. Another good source would be "Night Trains" by Peter Maiken. It covers all of the US trains that carried sleeping cars, so Southern trains are included.
