Baltimore's The Sun to Cut 140 Jobs

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Sun will eliminate about 140 jobs to reduce costs, in part because of a national downturn in advertising, the Baltimore newspaper said Friday. A memo from publisher and chief executive officer Michael E. Waller was e-mailed Friday to all employees.

The company hopes to reduce between 60 and 80 jobs with a buyout plan that will be offered next week to 200 employees, communications manager Carol Dreyfuss said.

The newspaper plans to eliminate other jobs by not hiring people to fill vacant positions and through attrition.

Dreyfuss said that despite steps taken to cut costs, The Sun "still has a significant shortfall in expense-reduction targets for 2002."

Dreyfuss said nearly all departments will be affected by the job cuts. The Sun has about 1,600 employees.

Dreyfuss said that if The Sun cannot achieve its goal of cutting 140 jobs by the end of March, the company may have to lay off employees.

"We hope to avoid other actions to reduce staff. But if we do not achieve our desired expense target through various expense controls and buyouts, we will be forced to implement involuntary staff reductions," Dreyfuss said.
