VERY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News - Homefront Preparations : One Thread

It looks as if something is going to happen to Greenspun, not sure what, whether it will disappear entirely or morph. Philip Greenspun has rarely communicated his intentions; luckily, one of our admins tipped me off to this.

If anyone knows of any site, completely or relatively ad-free, simple and user-friendly, please let us know.

Hey, I'm not dead yet... But seriously the easiest thing to do with photo forums is move them into photo.net. The site has a full-time staff. For the rest of the greenspun.com stuff, I'm not pulling the plug immediately. But I want to make sure that the services are rebuilt in a way that is sustainable. I've already told Steve that we can move his forum onto photo.net and redirect seamlessly from old greenspun.com bookmarks. -- Philip Greenspun (philg@mit.edu), December 07, 2001.

Ouchie. My question: is he serious this time? He's been talking about shutting down the server for the last two years.

In the event that he is, the next question: how much time and desire does OG have to start a new board?

We're already online at EZ Board, and I loathe going back there for a number of reasons, but opening it will take minutes, instead of hours.

If we don't go back to EZ, then OG, etc., are going to have to build pages and move the archives into another system, which if free, will eventually require payment of some type -- there are fewer "free" systems now than the last time that this question was raised.

My opinion: I will bow to the will of the majority, except in one instance -- I refuse to send EZ Board any money, unless someone can prove to me that there is a sound business plan in place, which I doubt.

I don't know anything about these guys: I'm merely tossing this into the hopper, so don't jump all over me if they're slime:

It looks as if the software will morph into something else we can use, but who knows what or when or even if? This is Philip, remember! So better be prepared, just in case.

If y'all will check around and see what sites are available, that will save me a great deal of time. We shall have resources at hand if something comes down the pike pretty fast.

Ezboard is problematical from my point of view too. It's been run very badly, breaks down a lot, and I'm not confident it will keep going.

that voy site reminds me of the old Pollies site.

There is a Current Events area, too. Lots of news type forums.

Host board looks similar to Dennis' mess board.

I know those boards stink, Barefoot, but they are "free" for the moment. I was going to toss in "Free Yellow" as well, but I hate that system worse than EZ.

If I were further along with my home business, I could put our board on my server as Lisa did with "Y2K and Beyond," but I'm probably about two years away from being able to do that. Wish we could find a private benefactor. Unlike TB2K, we aren't a large board and shouldn't generate major traffic that would tie up a server.

Oh, well. We are preppers and survivors. We'll find a way.

I wouldn't say they stink. I was just saying that they have a familiar look to them.

Either would be fine if you go by looks. I did not read any of the help forums to see what people there were bitching about. That's something that takes more time than I have today. Gotta go to work soon. I learned last night that I do not have to work Christmas. YAY!

Cool, Barefoot! I'm glad you got it off. I've always hated working holidays.

Messed up. Sorry! That's a board for one who already has a system. Nap time.

Delphi forums are still free. Here is one I sorta hang out at as a barebones example:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/plasticfarm/start/

It is an "R-rated" forum. While you're there, be sure to check out "Death On The Delta Queen". A slightly drunken synopsis can be found here:

Been typing an applingly boring piece of legal/medical crap, but the monetary recompense will be interesting. I'll have a look at this stuff later, can't do it right now, want to play.

Delta Queen? As in the riverboat which docks at New Orleans? Must read that later too.
