IRRIADATION TO BEGIN IN DECEMBER (SHIPPING SEEDS & PLANTS)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello everyone...Well it's finally here...irriadation in U.S. post offices is to begin this month. I received a newsletter from another site (National Home Gardening Club). It informs us that post offices in many states across the U.S. will begin to use irriadation this month. Also says to consider this when mailing seeds and plants. Suggests to consider using other means of shipping such as Fedex and UPS. Opinions...ideas?...

How about the lead lined shipping envelopes that film is shipped in?

The whole story is here....

USPS Mail Irradiation

The article states...."The Postal Service also noted that - as it has said before - irradiation will be used on targeted mail, not all mail."

Hopefully seeds will not be "target" mail.....I doubt that they will be.

This is probably a dumb question..but what would stop the bad guys from shipping bad stuff (anthrax or whatever) in lead lined envelopes...or by fed ex or UPS?? Just wondering.

To date I've not seen a verifiable, quantifiable, description of "Target Mail".

Does anybody realy know? I asked this question at the Post Office when I bought "self-stick" stamps for my Christmas cards, and they acted like I was Suspect No.1 on the Most Wanted List.

I've lived here all my life, so I was surprised at their "body language" response. And no, they didn't have any information on the subject to share.
