New Reporters Sans Frontières book: William Klein

There was some talk a while back about the small monographs published by Reporters Sans Frontières. Here's part of the press release I just received from them about their new monograph, which is on William Klein.

Reporters Sans Frontières has published a photo album of the work by William Klein. This French-English bilingual album sold at £4.50 / †5.79 in aid of the journalists whom we defend and their families. Composed of 50 photographs by William Klein and a preface by Christine Ockrent, this book is a new opportunity for the organisation to raise public awareness of the need to work towards press freedom. For the first time in colour, it helps RSF to achieve financial independence from institutional sponsors.

It is on sale at newspaper stands and/or bookshops:

- in France from November 28th, 2001 to January 30th, 2002

- in Great Britain from November 28th, 2001

- in Spain from November 28th to January 15th, 2002

- in Belgium from November 28th to January 28th, 2002

- in Switzerland from November 28th to January 30th, 2002

- in Canada from November 30th, 2001 to April 9th, 2002

- in the United States from December 7th, 2001 to June 15th, 2002

Starting in February, 2002, you can also order it on-line or buy it directly at the Reporters Sans Frontières offices.

Painter, photographer, film-maker and graphics designer, William Klein has been one of the 20th century's most controversial and influential artists. Born in 1928, he began as a painter before taking up photography. From the mid-50s Klein developed a photographic style that made aesthetic news, making him the spiritual father of rising generations of photographers. An iconoclastic and explosive vision enabled him to seize the crazy chaos of a big city, breaking all the rules of conventional photography in the process. Klein went after the urban crowd with a wide angle lens, with confrontational close-ups, instinctive grab shots, sharp contrasts and harsh printing methods. Klein's photos were always intended for books, for which he designed the original graphics. Since 1956 he has been publishing such classic photo books as a series on city life, including Life is Good and Good For You in New York, Rome, Moscow and Tokyo, as well as Close up and In and Out of Fashion. Klein's 15 feature-length films include the celebrated Who are You Polly Maggoo?, Mr. Freedom, Muhammad Ali, the Greatest and, in 1999, Messiah.

You can order it directly from them, by contacting them at rsf@rsf.org. It's a good cause to support, in my opinion.

Thanks for the reminder. I went out and bought it right away. Great book and a good cause too.

This is a very good compilation of Klein's work, and at a decent price ($8.00 in the US). I was nearly inspired to pop a 24 onto a camera and wade into a crowd, but it's pouring rain outside.
