Not sure if this is the answer, but on some of the Canonet models a mercury battery was used. If it has since been replaced with a different type (perhaps silver-oxide?) the voltage may be lower which can cause problems with the meter under-exposing. Jim

My Canonet, QL 17, reads about 1 stop under with an alkaline battery vs the mercury battery it was designed to work with (illegal in the US). I just calibrate the meter against my EOS 3, and set the ASA about 1 stop lower than standard (for 400 ASA film, set camera at 200 ASA).

No more underexposure problem, and the repair cost nothing.
