Would like to buy some pecans. Must be located in or near Dallas so I can pick them up, as the cost of shipping is prohibitive.

i read in the okc paper the other day that pecan prices are so far down that many growers are not even bothering to harvest them, as it would cost more to harvest them than the pecans are selling for. there are something like 167 million pounds of pecans in cold storage from last year, which was a superdeluxe bumper crop. there are simply more pecans already in storage than can be consumed for at least another year or two. it's the old supply vs demand that hurts farmers and ranchers all the time.

the reporter interviewed a number of growers along the red river, which as you should know is the border that keeps you dang texans out of oklahoma :) lol. There are many many many commercial growers with pecan farms on the oklahoma side of the red river, i would just about have to assume there are also as many on the south side of the red river also too. the article described how there is another good plentiful crop but the farmers just can't afford to pick them, so they are letting people come in and pick what they want for free or little cost.

since you are only 60-90 minutes south of there, i would think you could head up there and get pecans for virtually little cost, perhaps for the cost of gas and your time only. you would find most of these farms on either side of i-35 so it would be easy. i think i'd pack a picnic lunch and make a nice sunday trip out of it.

let us know how it turns out. and by the way, for whatever it's worth, lots of peanuts come out of the same area.

oh i forgot to mention. i bought 200 pounds at 25 cents a pound !! some i am giving, about 25 pounds, as christmas presents, the rest i have been selling at the flea market for $1.50 a pound. i sold some at $2 a pound but they go a lot faster at $1.50 a pound. i got mine locally here in okc, again they are so cheap if you will find someone who has some trees. me and a buddy went in and picked these up, we probably could have got them for free but i didn't feel quite right about it so gave the owner a little money. they were happy to get it.

look in the newspapers in the classifieds you will find bargains!

good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks Gene, that's exactly the sort of arrangement I am looking for. If I don't find a place closer to Dallas I may look up near OK.

Gene, why are they so inexpensive this year? I bought some a few weeks ago at Sam's and they were High! I'd love to find some inexpensive ones. I'm south of Madisonville in Texas, so Elizabeth, if you find any, let me know! Thanks.
