IT'S D-DAY FOR CONDIT IN POSSIBLE RE-ELECTION BID

December 7, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - Scandalized California Rep. Gary Condit has until the end of today to decide whether to run for re-election and face the possible wrath of voters disgusted with his conduct in the mystery of missing intern Chandra Levy.

Condit has reportedly told fellow Democrats he plans to run, but by waiting to the last minute to officially declare his intentions, he's invited speculation that he might simply back out.

His political-action committee, which usually finances the bulk of his campaign, hasn't raised a dime in months.

Once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, Condit's reputation took a pounding when it was revealed he had an affair with Levy, who disappeared last spring.

As of Wednesday, Condit had turned in only about 2,000 of the 3,000 valid signatures required to file a campaign. If he doesn't get enough signatures, he could pay a filing fee instead.

The deadline for filing is today.
