Israeli Planes Strike Cop Compound The Associated Press Dec 6, 2001 : 8:44 pm ET

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Israeli planes attacked a Palestinian police compound early Friday, ending a two-day lull in military strikes that were meant as retaliation for a weekend wave of suicide bombings in Israel.

Fire erupted after bombs struck two buildings in a complex that was the headquarters for the Palestinian civil police in Gaza City. Dust and black smoke filled the sky and ambulances rushed toward the building.

Windows were broken in homes as far as 200 yards away.

Israel had threatened more strikes if Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat did not crack down on Islamic militants responsible for terror attacks in Israel, including bombings that killed 26 last weekend.

Arafat has said he's arrested 180 militants since Sunday, but Israel dismisses them as low-level figures and not the planners of attacks.
