The characterization is stunted in that the term "masque" that is a symbolic enactment celebration describes too how the story works. More of a morality play depth with the decadent lord of the realm getting the most out of his decadent defiance until the new Lord(Death in a red Death Mask) supplants him. In the end all characterization(defiance, rage, denial) is consumed in horror to complete silence except for the final chiming of the rundown clock.

That last person was trying to confuse you, so let me lay it out plain and simple: The "Red Death" is personified into the form of the intruder that, at the base of the masquerade, disrupted the whole gay party. Since Prince Prospero thought himself "dauntless" and "sagacious" he basically ensured his death. He mocked the true power of the Red Death in thinking that he can escape his own fate while leaving his people to fend for themselves as they died with no aid from the Prospero whatsoever. Now, at the masquerade the Red Death comes into the castellated abbey and one by one claims the life of those who had dared to mock thier own fate. And in the end, "the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all."

This is a possible interpetation :

"masque of the red death" is actually the deadly sickness Turberculosis. That sickness makes you cough much blood so that your face before you die can be discribed to be like a face masque of red (blood) death. Poe lost many dear friends in this disease and he feared it alot.
