round Summarit lens hood?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Has anyone ever seen-heard of a round, threaded Summarit hood (for summarit 50mm)? I know about the rectangular boxy one (how is that, by the way?) but I found a round one that say "Weitzler Japan" for sale... is this really a summarit hood? Anybody know which of the two are better?

Thanks Phillip

Is it really "Weitzler Japan?" Or "Wetzlar Japan?" Sounds fishy to me either way. The rectangular hood has a cutout to reduce viewfinder blockage. I used to have one, and it worked for me. A round hood might be less efficient at keeping out stray light.

if you understand any german, go to the www.monochrom.com webpage. they sell very nice metal caps and lenshoods by Avenon. check it out.

I use a round rubber one made by Minolta, it's 40.5mm so I put a little tape on it and it seems to function fine near as I can tell. It also works onto the Walz Summarit filter set I got off eBay real well (for some reason). Anything to not spend some wild amount of cash on something as idiotic as a lens shade, I'm all for it. Have you really looked into what those things fetch these days? They're worth more than the lens!

Walz made a round vented one you can sometimes find pretty cheap on ebay - that's where I got mine, with a set of filters.

So, which hood is better? The rectangular or round?

i'm thinking I'm better off just saving the $100+ I would spend on the hood and buy an older, used Summicron 50mm (since I already have two hoods that would fit it) and keep the summarit as a back up 50mm...
