New virus alert - it's a Goner

A new computer virus called W32.Goner.A@mm is spreading over the Internet and in many corporate networks. The virus attachment name is gone.scr. This virus is completely new and separate from W32.Badtrans.B@mm, which appeared last week. It was only identified this weekend, and is only identified if your definition file was updated after 4th December.

It typically spreads by mailing itself to evey name in the Outlook address book. However, the worm can also spread it's infection using the ICQ and IRC network so all you "chatters" beware.

Infected NAV Version 5.x users will need to reinstall NAV 5.x due to the damage caused by this worm.

Virus Description: W32.Goner.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm written in Visual Basic. The worm has also been compressed using a known file compressor. The worm can also spread it's infection using the ICQ and IRC network. Ways this virus spreads: Email This worm arrives via email as the attachment GONE.SCR. The file is packed using the UPX packer program and is compiled using Visual Basic. The worm arrives in an email with the following: Subject: Hi

Message Body: How are you ?

Ah, so that's what the panic was about at work this afternoon. IT people came running through the office telling everyone to shut down email immediately and not to open an email with "hi" in the subject line.

We lost our email this morning. We pay squillions to our IT provider and they cannot instal an effective virus detection system
