Dyer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I know it may seem like Dyer would make the midfield weaker in terms of defending, but whatever happened to the idea that the best way to defend is to attack?

Robert is having problems at the moment, not least because part of his game has been sussed by defenders. However good a team is, they can't possible man mark Solano, Dyer, Bellamy and Robert. With 5 games or so together that could really be an exciting team that would scare the sh*t out of defences. When you add Shearer to that equation you have someone who will put away the chances that Robert and Solano should be making.

In theory we should be watching some terrific football in the next few months, and although it rarely goes to plan, I am quietly confident that we will be seeing a lot out of Dyer this season.

Sounds a bit like the tactics that Ardeles used at spurs...

I'll bet Dyer is getting injured against Bolton tomorrow, it would be typical.

Yep the 4th best defence in the premier and best goal scoring record and that twat lawro and co. once saying we need to strengthen and concentrate on the back four. Kenny Dog'lead did just that he tinkered, and clarted. And before you knew it teams started attacking us at home, we where no longer a fortress.

Yet our rivals who the media favoured -the same media who were telling us to strengthen AT THE BACK- made sure teams feared the offensive forces at their own favoured fortresses.

And in between how many times has -lawro's team- liverpool had a bench full of strikers at anfield or even away at a small mid table club? Does he tell them to strengthen at the back? My arse he does.

Doglead then goes on to make us a club with multiple fearsome full backs on the bench, and then forgets about our attack. We become mid table, liverpool have one less club to worry about taking tthe crown off Man Utd.

Teams played us at home they see we allow them to attack, thus they had more shots at goal than they had when Keegan was king, we lost more games.....

IMHO the best form of defence is attack, LOGIC SAYS IT IS.

I'm with you 100% paul lad.

Sounds great. Newcastle could become a vry exciting team to watch with the addition of Dyer. As for Robert he has looked pathetic in the last few games but was magnificent at the start of the season. Every time he got the ball he ran with it. (Successfully) Now he just passes or runs onto a ball ahead. I would like to see him trying to take people on all the time like he did in the game against troyes(i think it was troyes?).

Lets face it, he can't cross to save s life but once he runs it into the penalty area it creates the possiblity of a shot or penalty. Recently hes taken about 1 an on per game. Why doesnt he just try again and again. I don't mind seeing people loose the ball when trying to get past some1 upfront. I much rather see him doing that then putting those horible crsses to no-where in.

We should have Nobby putting balls in and Robert runningthem in. Im sure he's ible of it. I don't think that it's because he's been sussed he just hasn't been trying to lately. Maybe Robson has been tellng him to pass more?

I would anticipate Dyer playing in the middle with any one of Speed, Lee or Acuna. I only wonder if YBR will sell Lee at last if and when Dyer proves his fitness.

As always excuse the spelling. my keys on the keyboard don't seem to be very sensitive I type words like Newcastle and it comes out nwcle.

Jim, Robert can't have played against Troyes, he was cup-tied having already played in the Intertoto for Paris St. Germain - otherwise you're spot on mate!

With RObert, Solano, Dyer, Bellamy, Wor Al and ALbert Craig in the forward this could be our most entertaining line up since those heady Keegan days. Despite the fact that he has had poor reviews of late here, the media still seem to be very impressed with M.Robert. Definitely hold your breath time.

I'm sick of Dyer being on the front pages so Dyer must be heartily sick. It’s six months for the lad to get to play in the World Cup. There’s no hiding place. England look canny on occasions and very ordinary on others and I’m of the opinion that Dyer could improve the team.

Good news for us and Dyer, turning it on will improve both Solano and Robert imo. Oh for some lung busting muscle in the heart of our team.

Paul - before you can attack you have to get the ball!

However good it looks on paper I just can't see Robert, Solano and Dyer successfully playing in the same m/f. Having said that, I have a feeling that BR intends to give it a try, so hold on to your hats!

Regarding Robert, I read somewhere BR saying that the blerk was playing great until he came up against Jamie Carragher in the Liverpool game. Carragher marked him out of the game pretty physically, and BR was saying he think's this has had a significant effect on Robert's confidence.

I'm reminded of Ginola's problems after he was totally phsyched out by Lee Dixon at Highbury, and ultimately sent off. He was never the same at SJP after that experience, and I have a feeling something similar has happened to Robert. If so, BR now has the challenge of rebuilding his confidence and getting him flying again - without any doubt the guy is incredibly talented.

My point was Clarky that Gary Speed rarely tackles in midfield, he seems to me to do a lot of "off the ball" work - ie running about like a headless chicken.

We'd miss his aerial threat no doubt, but we are playing mroe through the middle nowadays so it's not as vital. Would playing Dyer instead of Speed really weaken our midfield? He's played wing back for England so there must be something in him that resembles a tackle. (no innuendo intended ;) )

The thought of Robert Dyer and Solano together in a midfileld is total bollox and we would get rolled over by far poorer footballers.

Not interested in justifying combinations as the 4 generals in the centre are as weak as any in the Premiership

The pity is that around them in Bellamy/Robert/Dyer/Shearer/Solano - (with a number of reserves in Shola and Lua who could slot in) we have as good as the best, or certainly almost.

Same Toon scenario as bobby seems happy with what he has in the centre of midfield.

Im not

ps How are the reserves getting on at Bolton with our South American midfield generals in charge?

......have one guess! Correct!

-- Anonymous, December 05, 2001

Seriously, think about it, comparing Dyer with Speed, there isn't a lot of difference when it comes to ball winning.

We obviously need a new general for midfield, but with the current squad of players, I reckon Dyer would do a better job than Speed in the centre.

Alternatively, Shearer could drop back a bit and be the man in between midfield and attack. However, this would only work for me when we are 1-0 up and counter attacking.

Lads , Dyer is injured and is sh1ttin himslef about that happening again pre World cup . He will be challenging for nowt I guarantee it . He will play Right midfield and keep well out of the way of the physical stuff. Dont pin your hopes on Dyer this season - you could be all very disappointed .

According to Sty Sports News last night, he had a great game for the Resorves. I think "sparkling" was the word they used - and they weren't talking about his alcohol intake (for a change).

-- Anonymous, December 06, 2001

However, they also said he played for 90 mins, whereas Biffa - he with 50 Toon games under his (not inconsiderate) belt this season - reckons it wsa only 60 mins. I know who I believe.

From the Beeb:

England international Kieron Dyer ended his nine-month spell on the sidelines by playing for Newcastle's reserves on Wednesday. The midfielder has been dogged by a shin injury but played 63 minutes of the 2-1 defeat away at Bolton.

Dyer, whose last appearance for the Magpies was in back February, told The Sun: "It's good to be back playing again. "I'm pleased with how it went. The sharpness will come back. "I felt no ill effects. In fact, I took a whack on it but it didn't affect me."

Goals from Dean Holdsworth and Clive Ross sealed victory for Bolton, with Shola Ameobi scoring Newcastle's only reply.
