gaussain optics?

what are the gaussain optics that the canon website refers to about its 50mm lenses?

I'm pretty sure it means the basic lens type ie., a Gaussian configuration of the optical elements. This is the most common type of standard high speed lens. There are typically 4 - 8 lens elements roughly symetrically arranged around the diaphragm as in this diagram:
