greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Observant OKers will have noted that J-J Cote (well, I could look up the HTML code for the little accent thingy above the e, but it's not covenient at the moment)... J-J anyway - you know who I mean.... J-J took the bronze medal at the latest US night-o champs in a strong, deep field.

Way to go J-J!

Yeah, well, this was one unusual situation, I'll tell you that. Swampfox was right in there, but he mispunched (with e-punching, you don't have the codes right there on the card, which is what probably got him). Thrown into the mix was the fact that control #6 was definitely misplaced, which cost everyone time, though the amount varied. I probably lost the most (counting the time lost on #6 and the time lost because we were then navigating to #7 from the wrong spot). But nobody protested, so the results stand. Meanwhile, you have to realize that this course was set on Saturday afternoon, because they lost permission to use the intended area across the street, and had to scramble to get new courses designed. The starts were delayed for two hours while we waited for the course setter to come back from Kinko's with the new maps.

Oh, JJ's too short report makes it clear that the night O' was a classic. It has all the ingrediants -- an unusual set of events, a variety of screw-ups, not many people there so that those that were there are truly special, and, of course, at least a couple of those in attendance (JJ and Swampfox) with the ability the improve/embellish the story as the years pass, facts be damned. Reminds me of an A meet in Louisiana many years ago, in one stretch of 5 controls on the blue course, 4 were misplaced (2 of the last 3 on Saturday, and then the first 2 on Sunday) and noboby protested! I believe Spike and Snorkel were there?

I thought those days were gone for good. Damn, should have gone to the night O'.

I don't recall any controls being misplaced in Louisiana. I'm sure Wyatt will back me up on that.

Congrats JJ way to smoke Swampfox. Behold the power of skipping the Possum Trot.
