Need more edge sharpness

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have the 28-105, great lens but a little soft in the corners. Can't afford the 28-70L (why doesn't Canon make an f4 L in this range and price it similarly to the 70-200?) so I'm considering the following;

Tokina 28-70 ATX pro II Pluses, good reviews, excellent price, good build quality, should look real good at f4.

Negatives, Non USM (how slow and noisey?), 77mm filters!

USM 50 1.4 Pluses, USM, sharper at wider f/stop, uses smaller filters, it's a Canon.

Negatives, Have to zoom with my feet which can be a problem when there is a fence in front of you with a 2000 lbs. bull behind it.

Anyhow, any thoughts? Others I should consider? Price has to be under $400.

thanks,

You can't have everything for $400. If sharpness is your main goal--you already have a nice zoom--get a prime, a tripod and stop down. The EF 50 1.4 USM is a wonderful lens" sharp, contrasty and nice bokeh.

this may be a little off the topic but there is something that i would like to say. there is nothing that i apreciate more than a fast 50mm lens. recently when i was shooting a highschool basketball game (horrible lighting conditions) i found that i was saved by my 50mm 1.8. with iso 1600 film and my 50mm f/1.8 shooting wide open i was able to get 1/250 sec exposures without flash consistently! the catch is that it was on my old manual focus olympus om-2 but this got me considering buying the 50mm f/1.8 for my eos system! it's only $80!
