Appeal - its official

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Its official. The Beeb says it:

Newcastle are to appeal against Alan Shearer's dismissal at Charlton.

Shearer was sent off by referee Andy D'Urso 87 minutes into the 1-1 draw at The Valley on Saturday after his attention was drawn to the incident by assistant Graham Beale. Shearer is alleged to have elbowed defender Jon Fortune as he challenged for a high ball. But both he and manager Bobby Robson later protested his innocence, a view largely backed by television replays.

Robson announced immediately that the club intended to appeal against the red card, and the confirmation came this morning. "Newcastle confirmed this morning that they are to lodge an appeal with the Football Association over the sending off of Alan Shearer at The Valley on Saturday," said a spokesman.

If the appeal fails, Shearer will miss three vital games - the visit of Blackburn to St James' Park on 15 December and trips to Arsenal and Leeds during the following week.

Some good news to brighten my day. :-)

No KB. Some of us commented on it after the Fulham game :-( OK, so I was only 2 weeks premature. So, CB will miss Blackburn. Big deal - we'll have LKD back by then and although not his preference, he will slot straight into the space left by Super Gob.

LONDON (Reuters) - Newcastle United captain Alan Shearer has had last weekend's red card rescinded by the Football Association.

Shearer was judged to have elbowed Charlton Athletic's Jon Fortune in last Saturday's 1-1 draw in the premier league.

But an FA spokeswoman told Reuters that after watching video footage of the incident, match referee Andy D'Urso decided that Shearer's actions did not warrant a red card.

United chairman Freddy Shepherd told the club's website on Monday: "This is great news, but something we fully expected. We are all very pleased but particularly for Alan who suffered the injustice in the first place."

Common sense prevails and justice - for once.

According to my Auntie.

Would they have given us a replay if we had conceded one Al had gone off? Jim Royle's favourite expression comes to mind... I wonder whether Al is going to sue Littlejohn et al for defamation of character...

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

I doubt it, but I'd like to see Littlebrain take his opinions onto the pitch in a pro-celebrity charity raiser. We'll see who had it coming then. F**kwitted bent nosed c**t.

Now, now...you know if any of us 'dare' travel to those dark depths we'll only get told off by the makem Guardians of Righteous Justice.

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

Right then. As I said on here after watching a replay Al was badly wronged by the ref and his no-assistance. The question now is ... what measures will the Ref's Association take against Beale - the man who not only saw something that never even occurred but was then sufficiently motivated to talk D'Urso into a straight red ? (is there no beginning to this man's talent?)

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

Lovely, KB - but I think Tsunami may come in for flack from the Home Counties (Herts to be more precise) using such a controversial analogy.

Loony, I suspect Beale will be sent back to where he came from - to his Auntie Pauline in Albert Square if memory serves me right. T0$$er. Of course, D'@rse'ole will get away scott-free. D'@rse'ole.

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

Should something also happen to Fortune, who, by acting if he'd been shot, started the whole rumpus in the first place?

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

To be fair to the ref, D'@rsehole wasn't really at fault, fair enough he missed the incident, but he went on the advice of his linesman who IMHO is the one who should be shot, standing a few yards away and getting it completely t!ts up.

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

Fair comment Paul. However, the Ref is boss of his team, and as some auld blerk once said "the buck stops here!"

Wasn't me btw!! ;o{I

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

Definitely the linesman who should carry the can. D'Urso had to go where the linesman pointed him.

Why doesn't the referee go to the other officials in cases like that ? Surely the fourth could have had as good a view as a lot of the crowd, and even the other linesman might have seen something. Might help the ref to come up with a more balanced assessment.

Just seen the incident for the first time, and if that's the worst AS gets up to from now on, we haven't a care in the world on that score.

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

Problem was Pit Bill that the ref naturally went first to his closest official. As a result of their 15 second conversation he was obviously in no doubt whatsoever that Al was guilty of deliberate violent conduct so there was no need for him to consult anyone else before flashing the red card. Both D'Urso & Beale should now be forced to explain (to the FA if not to me!) what evidence they used to come to that flawed conclusion. One or both have been proven incompetent at best, cheats at worst and the game needs to know which

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

As much as I think D'Urso should be dropped down a division, I can't blame him for the decision. He misses the incident (OK stupid mistake to make) so he goes to his linesman. The Charlton fans are all "aap in aarms" about it, Charlton player lying in a coma on the ground and Shearer trying to look innocent (obviously because he was).

If the linesman was so insistent that Shearer had elbowed the "Fortunate" player, then he had no real option.

Now though, after reviewing it, he should phone up the linesman and abuse him.

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

Nah, actually D'Urso was obviously to blame. Must've been if he thought Bellamy's... erm... "challenge" was worthy of a booking.

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

I take your point LT, but I was thinking along the lines that however adament the linesman flagging the offence was, maybe even just out of curiosity, it might be worth consulting the other officials.

Seems like the linesman shouted louder than D'Urso's common sense. I don't think it was a case of D'Urso not watching, only of not seeing. And from what's been shown on TV, god alone knows what the linesman thought he saw.

Wouldn't you think they'd have twigged by now that in cases like this, they have to be more than just suspicious, to put it mildly ? If current technology, which isn't even there specifically to record such incidents can make them look fallable, they'd be better off erring on the side of caution.

-- Anonymous, December 03, 2001

PB.......don't you think it's possible that recent disciplinary action against other Officials might be making them so worried about being subsequently accused of missing something like AS elbowing a defender in the throat, that D'Urso and his amigo may have subconsciously erred on the side of caution with regard to self- preservation?

This was precisely what concerned me about the demotion of Dermott Gallagher.

Bit of nostalgia here but remember the reception Shearer's "tough but fair" game got at SJP while he was with Blackburn?
