Get the EOS 30 and EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM and enjoy. Later, you may wish to add an external flash such as the 420EX and a telezoom like the EF 100-300 4.5- 5.6 USM (for nearby birds).

I agree Puppy Face, this is exactly the kit I have, and I love it.

I bought the 75-300 IS USM, rather than the 100-300 USM, mainly for the fact that it has the image stabilisation facility. It didn't cost too much more that the 100-300 either. In tests the IS lens has a similar performance to the 100-300, except when wide open at 300mm where the 100-300 might be a bit sharper, but you might have missed the shot anyway without the IS facility.

The 28-105 lens is really sharp for a mid-priced zoom, and much, much better than the 28-90 lens you get with the EOS 30 kit. I tried the 28-90 lens, before I swapped it for the 28-105, and I can see a clear difference in the quality of my photo's even with 6x4 prints.

As far as I am aware the EOS 30 has the same name in Asia as it does here in the UK, so look for the EOS 30. It is called the Elan 7e in the USA.
