Is anyone here a Linux user? I use linux and w98 and was curious if anyone has taken on the task of switching entirely to linux.

oh I'd love to use linux. I just figured it would be to much hassle and complication. How often do you browse and e-mail using Linux.

A very good friend who's completing his doctorate in Computer Science at Notre Dame runs both. For what it's worth, he loves Linux and tolerates Windows. I believe his only reason for staying with Windows at all is the proprietary nature of many other Microsoft programs which require a Windows platform. I've never tried it but respect his opinion highly.

Actually I get around very well on the net and the applications I am interested are FREE. Linux has come a long way in terms of useability by the non-geek (like me). I’ve only had a computer for about 4 years and I’m able to do a fair amount with linux. I haven’t gotten to the point where I can design my web site like the one I created with FP98 but that is my goal. There is a free “Basic Linux Training” course on the net whose mailing list I’ve been on for some time. No flack, just help - but there is a lot of email. URL- http://www.basiclinux.net/ Basic Linux Training I still use windose a lot but mainly because my spouse is deathly afraid of linux (no good reason just a habit using windose). More and more I am convinced that i'll be totally linux soon. Can't beat the software prices, control of my computer, security and overall versatility of the OS. Not that I know that much about all that. Just enough to know what I do want and don't want. I'd really like to find a "Christian Linux Users" forum but to date there isn't one. Here's where my web site is...one day with linux providing Messiah delays of course :-) Singing Falls

Oxman, you're encouraging me... I have a friend, my computer "consultant," who has gone completely to Linux. I should be getting a new computer this week, so he's promised to put Linux in it and set up my old one completely with Linux. I'm using the Win version of StarOffice, and am excited about being able to convert my magazine directly into pdf in the Linux version. (The printers here are going to pdf format.) But this non-geek ignoramus trembles with fear thinking about getting into it. If you find the Christian Linux group, let me know!

Linux is no harder than win. Actually it is easier at this point for me because all of the software and documentation to learn it are free. That being the case the linux operating system is not cheap in terms of quality. My experience is that is far surpasses windows in terms of customization and security.

I can remember when we first got our computer. Up to that point my wife was the only one to deal with them as a legal secretary. Given our idea of a cottage industry I thought it only wise to invest in one. Ha! I got it set up and started “messing”. My wife was having a hard time with it and so was I. She thought I was going to blow up the box and I thought the federals would be knocking at my door any minute. Seems like every time I touched the keyboard I received the, “you have performed an illegal operation” message with the big red X. That was four years ago. I knew my limited income was going to limit my functionality since windows software applications are so expensive. Especially in the arena of graphics software, which I am particularly interested in. I really prayed about it and there is no doubt in my mind that discovering linux was an answer to that prayer. When I discovered the GIMP software I was on a good footing and I have been plugging away at it ever since. I will say it has not been easy learning linux but I don’t regret attempting it one iota. Life is so full of distractions from the Lord and taking on another operating system wasn’t my idea of avoiding dissipation. Nevertheless Linux is the tool for the poor homesteader in my opinion and surely Messiah is guiding me through it like He has everything else. If you have a good deal on a used pentium system I am interested. Here’s a graphics page I did at the end of my testimony if you’d like to see it. Y eshua the Holy Savior

my machine at home is 100% linux suse that is. wifes machine is w98, as is the kids machine ($2 at a yard sale) i love linux, i never realized how much i worried about losing my "good files" on the windows machine. now i don't worry at all. get someone to set you up. from then on, it'll prolly run without a hitch. i keep mine one 24/7 and never have a problem, unless i'm trying out something new and muck up my system. (i tinker a lot with it):) i do our church's web page and record the sermons and convert them to real audio format and upload them to the website, i can do all of this for free on linux, don't want to know how much it would be to buy all the programs for windows to do the same things, plus at one time i had a home network setup so all the computers could "talk" to each other. it sounds weird, but it was SSSOOOOOO nice. i sent many files back and forth between the machines alot more than i thought i would. good luck to those who try the switch, it's easy nowadays. :)
