I wet dream I had around 1982 was seeing him holding the second division trophy aloft away at Palace, probably not want you wanted to know.

Coming on as a sub v Fulham (?) c 1979 and coming in at the back post and slotting a shot in, except he missed, he did a Ketsbaia demolition job on the advertising hoarding in frustration

Him being told that Chelsea were our biggest challengers in our promotion year and that he HAD to stop Pat Nevin from feeding Kerry Dixon at all costs. By 30 seconds past 3 he had put Nevin on the ash path and been booked.

Luton.

Fond memories of a short, skinny, but tough Geordie lad with a big heart, and not a little skill.
Like Macbeth, my main memeory is of him virutally cutting Pat Nevin of Chelsea, who was in full flight at the moment in question, in two with a "tackle" that would warrant a life ban these days. Probably not how would prefer to be remembered!

.... ps: Macbeth's post reminded me that KW was the cheeky bugger who sat on the ball to take the p*ss out of the Luton players when we were slaughtering them at SJP - it was 4 or 5 nil at the time.

The Luton players weren't fair pleased with Wor Kennie over this, and let him know.

I remember one of those "news" items in the Guardian one Saturday. It reckoned that Newcastle were going to name their new stand after Beardsley and Gascoigne who had been sold to pay for it. It then went on to say that Kenny Wharton was going to be sold in order to build a new burger bar!

Sitting on the ball v Luton, it was Gazza who demolished the oppo but Kenny Wharton was teh one to take the p*ss. Has some #thing happened to him??

no Dougal is a groupie and wil be doing some sycophantic piece on a coach as a means of getting in with Aaron later on,

Christ that Luton game brings back memories - was sitting in that bliddy awful temporary stand in Leazes end , and it felt like it was gonna give way when Gazza completed his hattrick . Kenny Wharton was a class act . My residing memory of him was looking in the programme at the end of the season and he would have played in almost every shirt number by season end .

Didn't he score the fifth on the 5-5 v QPR? I remember a late scrambled effort in some high scoring match...but now I think, it was one at SJP I'm sure...ah, those hazy unreliable memories...

He certainly scored but it was away Waddle got a hatrick , mcdonald and wharton got the others. Oct 27 1984. My mate was there (QPR fan) he cant remember either when wharton scored.

Thank you for that MacB. You'll be getting a letter soon.

I'm after memories because my own big memory of him is that Luton game, too, and it seemed a bit of a cheek to write an entire article without reference to other achievements..

Besides which, Kenny is a youth coach and even my hormones haven't got round to the Under 19s yet.

The masterful way he led Jackie Charlton's early-season attack despite (I think?) never having played there in his life.

Dougal - just a suggestion but why not try and interview one or two people currently working with Bones ?

ahhhh the memories, chelsea and pat nevin being one 'em. When I was one of maggies millions I used to see him walking around eldon square in the middle of the afternoon, like he was one of maggies millions. He always wore the same stuff, a pair of pods, jeans and a le breve shirt. He was a canny lad and would always stop and say hello when we asked him if we were going to loose on satda.

The Whart did get the fifth in that game at Loftus Road, unfortunately it wasn't the last goal of the game, Rangers nabbed a late equaliser (it's not often Newcastle throw away a lead in London so we were all a tad miffed in the away end) 4 - 0 up at half time as I recall. My abiding memory of the Whart was when he grew that 'tache, not a good idea Kenny son, not a good idea at all. I also remember him clutching a 'Pride of Crudas Park' banner during some post season procession when we'd finished 3rd in the old second division or something.
