A Question About Plumbing For a Dishwasher

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

We were given a dishwasher. My husband had the dishwasher with him when he went to the hardware store to pick up plumbing supplies he would need to hook it up. The man helping him looked at it (a White-Westinghouse) and told him it should be connected to the cold water pipe. We tried it out last night and are now wondering if we should have hooked it up to the hot water pipe. We don't remember dishwashers (we use to have one years ago in a different house)using cold water to wash dishes and this model obviously doesn't heat it's own water. Shouldn't it be the hot water pipe that it gets the water from?

Thanks to any of you that have the answer for us.

I don't know specifically about the White-Westinghouse you have but I do believe there are dishwashers which heat their own water. I would think the owner's/installation manual would have had something as basic as which water line to tap as your supply. If you no longer have the manual, I might suggest looking for a White-Westinhouse web site to see if there's one available for download. I'd also think they'd have a customer service department which could help you. I hope this helps.

Our maytag will keep the water heated to a certain temperature, if it the button for that function is pushed in. I think it should get the water from the hot water pipe, but check the web site as Gary suggested.

Terry, The dishwasher should be hooked up to the hot water supply. Since the dishwasher is usually next to the sink, the water supply to the dishwasher is tied into the hot water line under the sink and it should have its own shut off valve.
