December 2, 2001 -- The Rev. Al Sharpton yesterday made it clearer than ever that he's eyeing a big prize: the presidency.

"I want to be president of the United States," the black civil-rights leader boldly told a crowd of his supporters in Harlem.

If he gains enough support, Sharpton said, he would run as a Democrat in the 2004 election.

While he has expressed interest in being president before, yesterday's announcement was the strongest indication yet that he wan ts to run and plans to do so.

"Clearly, I am saying that [being president] is an ambition that I have and I am not going to back away from that," he told The Post.

He added that he stood a good chance of being elected.

"If I decided to run, I'd be running to win. I certainly won't be running because I have nothing else to do."

He was meeting last night with a committee at the State of the Black World convention in Atlanta, seeking that group's endorsement.

The committee, chaired by Harvard University black-studies and philosophy professor Cornel West, was formed by Sharpton in August to explore a White House run.

Surely, he jests! My goodness, does anyone take this man seriously...ever? Maybe they should team him up with Gore, as a running mate, and make the Democrats the laughing stock of the world! There must be dozens of men (or women) that would be much better candidates to be the first black president of the US. Ok, maybe millions!
