MOSCOW -- A military transport plane crashed while trying to land Sunday in the Russian Far East, news reports said.
News agencies said there were either 17 or 18 people aboard the Il-76, which was operated by Russia's border guard service. There were no reports of survivors.
According to the Interfax news agency, there were eight crew members and nine cargo handlers aboard the aircraft when it went down in Russia's Khabarovsk region. ITAR-Tass said there were 18 people aboard.
Military officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Interfax said there was a fire aboard the plane before it crashed. The aircraft broke apart when it touched down during an emergency landing near the village of Novaya Inya, 65 miles east of Okhotsk. Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press
