Today's assignment

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Troll-free Private Saloon : One Thread

For those of you who want extra credit, I would like suggestions about a new host for Unk's forums. It seems that I left the door open a bit too wide, and undesirables have followed me in.

If anyone knows of, or can find a host that will allow me to limit access by vandals, please post it here so I can check it out.

Thank you.

Deedah, how did you come to the conclusion there are 'bridge lurkers' infesting this forum?

Inquiring dogs want to know...

Dog,

A familiar IP showed up.

All,

What do you think of this place?

On the plus side it's free and I can disable HTML to stop the evil coders, on the minus side you will need to register to post a reply.

Umm, that would be this place.

Sorry folks, I had this set up with links but I had a crash and had to start from scratch and ran out of time. The 1st addy is the list all the rest were retrieved from.Lotsa choices.

I like Lusenet but not at the expense that it will eventually run people away.I am wondering about something an old poster once said about taking Phil's code and tinkering with it to suit your needs, anyone remember that?

Well, gotsta go.

It doesn't matter to me where you choose to go. I'll probably follow. Must one disable HTML to disable Java scripts? I'm just thinking about the loss of hot links, italics, bold, etc.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), November 29, 2001.

Yea Unk, that place came up in my little journey, but it didn't look worth a shit and wasn't included in the list.

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), November 29, 2001.

Try IKONBOARD.COM

Also, you can go to UBB.COM, and they will host a place for you (and provide the software), for a price varying between $25 and year and $250, depending on the options you choose. With the limited bandwidth use on your board, a BW surcharge would not be an issue.

I'm thinking [always a danger in that, so it seems] that if the troll is here, but isn't doing any damage, why should we care? My point is: Why look for another forum if this one seems to be working? I can understand if you want to do it to include some of the folks who currently will only post on the Open Discussion forum, but, otherwise, I, personally, have no objection to a "fly on the wall" listening in. I don't think I've ever said anything important in my life. I see no reason to worry about this now.

:-( Big bummer. My vote shouldn't count much since I don't have a recognizable handle and am a bit of a morph myself. But, I'll throw my .02 in anyway. I love the greenspun software. If there's a way to salvage this without moving, that would be the best solution. I almost agree with Anita, but have one reservation. What if the troll just waited until things got more active here before starting up with the slicing and dicing? If it's a common IP, like AOL, it might be hard to block the IP without blocking a lot of other

oops, pushed "submit" before finishing. cont'd...

without blocking other people. Can you change the password on this forum, and have everyone send another email that includes their IP? Or, is the problem that someone who was given the password handed it off to someone else? Hmmm...don't know how to control that, dammit. Maybe give the keys to a few more people here who can help keep watch?

Thanks all.

I wouldn't close this place, but even though about 60 folks have emailed me for the password, this place will eventually die without new blood injections. I have tried to be careful about who gets in, but I am only human and on rare occasion make mistakes. The troll may or may not be here incognito, and I really really REALLY don't give a shit so long as the old tricks aren't repeated here.

However, I still prefer an open board if at all possible. It just sux that the software here is so limiting, I can only do so much about distructive idiots. It would be wonderful to have a simple HTML filter so that folks could still post pics and links, but could not post the shitty tricks we saw lately at the other place.

I shall keep looking around I guess, and will open up a new board someplace. I am trying to find a place that at least is similar to the look of greenspun. And I want to do it sooner than later, before everyone drifts away from the WWW for good.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeeD@yahoo.com), November 29, 2001.

I agree with Anita and just.

Wait and see what happens, change the password if necssary, do it more than once if necessary.

This format is one of the few I can use while I am dealing with the temporary handicap I have. I would hate to lose you all again.

May it work out. Ojala.

Unk, if I recall correctly, Phil G was fairly helpful during some of the olden days. Has he been informed that script kiddies are vandalizing several of his LUSENET forums? He was always concerned about $$...wonder if he would add an HTML filter if we paid him to do it?

Here's an idea

Instead of stressing about the forum, why don't you all log off and take your wife(wives) to dinner.

The moral minority has returned.

Um, because I'm pleased not to have a spousal unit to concern myself with? Logging onto the forum is my way of DEstressing. And, before you voice your next concern for the well being of those around me, my employer heartily approves of my net surfing.

Thank you for your concern.

-- (just an@anonymous.one), November 29, 2001.

I was kindof looking around for my "wife", myself, but I think you expressed my thoughts more eloquently, Anonymous One.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), November 29, 2001.

Yeah, me too, Anita.

Since we "all" have wife/wives, where are mine??

-- Oxy (Oxsys@aol.com), November 29, 2001.

It looks to ME like whoever the troll is, he/she/it/they has a sense of humor. Maybe we're lookin' at someone who's just a lil bit nuts [kindof like all of US?]

I think the funny posts were written by people making fun of the troll, but I might be wrong.
