going down in it

greenspun.com : LUSENET : People Photography : One Thread

kind of like a cloud
i was up, way up in the sky
and i was feeling some feelings you wouldn't believe
sometimes i don't believe it myself
and i decided i was never coming down
just then a tiny little dot caught my eye
it was just about too small to see
but i watched it way too long
it was pulling me down. . .
i was up above it
i was up above it
(now i'm down in it)

so what, what does it matter now?
i was swimming in the haze
now i crawl on the ground
and everything i never liked about you
is kind of seeping into me
try to laugh about it now
but isn't it funny how everything works out
i guess the joke's on me, she said
i was up above it
(now i'm down in it)

i used to be so big and strong
i used to know my right from wrong
i used to never be afraid
i used to be somebody
i used to have something inside
now it's just this hole that's open wide
i used to work it out
i used to be somebody

i'll cross my heart, i'll hope to die
but the needle's already in my eye
and all the world's weight is on my back
and i don't even know why
what i used to think was me is just a fading memory
i looked 'em right in the eye and said goodbye
i was up above it
i was up above it
now i'm down in it

Tried to make the background black with white text, but that didn't work. Shadow detail is easier to see that way (and looks much better on the print).

Natalie, the model, wanted to do something dark and funky. She didn't have to ask me twice. . .

Wow. No comment. I love it.

Mike...

Well, I'd say you've just taken the "People Photography Forum" to a whole new level. Multiple photographs (just wonderful, as usual) and words. Now the pressure's on.

Thanks for the comments. Just realized I didn't provide the lyrics credit: Words are by Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails. It's the CD we had cranked up while we were shooting. . .

I enjoy photos in series like this. Well done, Mike.

agreed! good stuff!

On another note... Mike where do you find all your models?

-- Nigel Smith (nlandgl@unite.com.au), November 28, 2001.

well im gonna babble cuz im sitting in a free computer bar with a beer and a beautiful woman in my eyes with great language, and i don't get to log on other than at work anymore.

mike: i love this progression. something i admire about you and many of the people who contribute here is your uncompromising love of photography. i love it too, as i hope some of you remember from the past, but sometimes life gets in the way, and the last thing you can think of is photography (art/anything but stupid life) unless you are DIEHARD. right now, i'm sitting with the most incredible woman, and we're friends and she loves my portfolio (if you wanna call it that), but the last thing in the world i could do is find what it takes (what used to come so naturally...) to take photos of her. art takes so much...and im not willing to compromise, so i sit here and wait for life to get better so i can photograph again (is that ever gonna happen again? geesh--ps don't let spellcheckers fix 'geesh'--it comes out 'geisha':)), and hope the skills i learned and the time i put in and the passion i have never leave me.

don't quit, mike, and i hope you do a lot more then spend your time showing off to all us internet fools (meant nicely:)). i hope you pound the ground everyday with your eyes set on heaven, cuz you and many around here have what it takes to be on the cover of whatever magazine you want (to show, whatever turns your crank), even in the light of Life (or rather the darkness of Her), as many of the posts here continually prove.

well don't hate me in the morning for coming clean. keep at it guys/girls/other:)

& thanks for coming around here even though the man with the original vision has all but disappeared:)

Additional thanks, everyone!

Nigel, I find models all over the place (and some find me). : ) Some are professional, part-time, or aspiring models that I meet through other photographers or over the internet. Some are women I've met hanging out in bars and cafes, at parties, or on the street. Some are women who have been introduced to me by friends or acquaintences.

Shawn, re: "art takes so much...and im not willing to compromise, so i sit here and wait for life to get better so i can photograph again" Please don't take this the wrong way, but fuck that nonsense! Forget about "art" and compromise, and just take some photos of her! Doesn't matter whether they're good or not, just do it. I take lots of lame photos all the time--it's a major reason I'm able to take some that are worthwhile. "Man cannot leap to the absolute; he must go forward from where he stands." Stop thinking you have to pick up the camera and do great things--just pick up the camera and do stupid things. Try to take the worst snapshots imaginable. Shoot a whole roll with your eyes closed. Stick the camera in your pants and shoot out your fly--just do something!! Dare to suck! It's liberating. . .

Interesting juxtaposition of phrases, Mike.

The photographs are excellent, as always...the advice was't bad either.

I think Shawn is, at the moment, more in love with a woman than in photography.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Priorities, and all :)

That would explain why he sounds so miserable . . .

-- Mike Dixon (mike@mikedixonphotography.com), November 30, 2001.

Smartass (squared) :)

Actually, that post may have been what I need to get me going again...I'm augmenting with a digital camera hopefully this week, probably an Olympus C3020.

And I'm buying a computer, so you'll get stuck with my ugly mug soon enough (or rather them thar women again)...in love or miserable or both and neither LOL!
