are you popular in gateshead like?

Answers

It would appear that school is out.

Can't be that popular,he lives miles away.

I have often wondered why people love their home town/city so much when they live away.If you love it so much, why leave??

I mean we are constantly being told that Newcastle is a great city where it is a pleasure to live and quality of life improves by the day.

Then there is the Newcastle/Gateshead 'buzzin' initative????

Should that not be 'Newcastles continuing policy of stealing from the rest of the north east'initative?

Interesting to note that in tonights Chronicle it reveals that Newcastle are 6th in the league for non-payment of the television license. That after the papers revealed that Newcastle residents are the least academically qualified in the country!

Now I know why they leave!!!!

Think i'll get mesell down the travel agents one -way flight shop.

Kev people leave or economic reasons, everyone knows that. When I left the NE as a whole had an enormus unemployment rate and the future wasn't exactly bright. Newcastle has one of the top universities in the country. The only reason why other regions have higher acedemic ratings is because those regions are full of exiled geordies.

Hmmm. I am not sure you even believe that.

Syme has a good point.

My dad works in Engineering, and all of the big, well paid jobs are in London. One job in London last year had the same budget as four years worth of all the jobs in the north east.

Not necessarily thick northerners, more lack of well paid jobs up here for people who can do them.

Err Macbeth,I think you may wish to have a look on RTG.

Your ugly mug has just tipped up on there!

There was a Makem on the Three Legends justifying your attendance for Cup games on the basis that you have more London-based ST holders than any other PL side. What does that say, Kev?

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

There is no way I wil defend the non-attendees at cup games.

I have received mass criticism about this before. They really boil my piss. These 'fans' think that they are above attending against smaller teams. Therefore trying to provoke a me into defensive stance towards Sunderland fans on this subject is lost on me.

I wasn't on about the attendance question, Kev: it was the point about all your London-based supporters.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Dougal me dear, you seem to be going 'off' on a tangent somwhere.

All i asked was why do people leave the area then love the place so much? thats all.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Kev, why do you not like my answer. Economics pure and simple. As Paul said, those of us that had to pay our way through university etc, need to make more money than NE firms are prepared to pay for. The NE has been and always will be a place where knowing someone will help you greater than knowing something. I know this is not always the case, however it was with the majority of the lads I went to school with.

For me it was first job after university. Happened to be in the midlands (Nottingham) so that was where I went.

I returned to the north east after 4 years as I wanted to come home. I worked at NEI for a year.

During this year, 6 months in Whickham, 6 months in Crawcrook, my wife some how became pregnant. We were to go from two nice salaries to one. I was offered a job in Scotland by an ex-boss (so I hadn't gon elooking for the move) and for lots mroe money. Money was a driving issue with child due so we moved.

Now children are at school, wife has excellent job and the we won't move until we retire, we'll then retire to Northumbrian wastelands.

Okay ?

economics and the weather, and the food, but mainly the weather

.....you mean you elected to move to NYC because of the climate, gb?
Somehow I doubt it - or you would surely have moved elsewhere. The NY climate is undoubtedly better than here, but on the basis of living there for 8 years, I know it isn't exactly San Diego.
The food is canny mind - but there's nee stotties!

there is also a little thing called worldliness Kev . Im sure you have plenty of it , but you dont have to stick in one spot all your life surely . Who was it who said - ' Its not where you're from , it's where you're at ' - on here ( it may be the much berated LR ) ? What Im trying to say is that its fine to leave your home town .. its fine to love where you are from .. its fine to move on . It doesnt stop you wanting to go back either mind . The world is a very large place , with a huge amount of experiences to be had . Meself Ive had plenty of those on the Sunderland Road , and round Gateshead stadium - I just felt it was time to move on . I love this site for justification of one's beliefs , but small mindedness is one thing I abhor . Newcastle through and through bonnie lad , just dont live there . Justified - I think so .

...... as someone far wiser than Sting and me said - "you can take the Geordie out of Newcastle, but you can't take Newcastle out of the Geordie!"

Alreet? ;o{]

So who was 1st-5th in non-payment of tv licence? Somewhere in London or on Wearyside? :-)

I recently moved to the NE, but I wouldn't want to live in Newcastle because I didn't want to live in any city, but in a village community. I am far happier now than I have ever been, despite living further away from work, having a pay cut, and there being few local amenities. When speaking to a colleague at my last place I was told I was making a 'very brave decision' - well, it was difficult to move so far, but if that's bravery I'll take the medals and wear with pride.

I moved because as great a city as it is, it is next to Sunderland and no matter how many times we asked the council would not stop people from there coming into Newcastle.

The monumental ignorance of these comments beggars belief. ECONOMICS is the answer - any fool most fools know that. And who emigrates? The young and the most dynamic members of any society - so the people they leave behind are over-represented in the categories of old age, less educated, less ambitious etc. Some of the dynamic are lucky enough to stay and many are able to return after they have built a career.

Presumably you've never lived anywhere else? Which goes some way to proving the point. :-D
