My film is a Blue/Grey Colour after developing it!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

I bought a complete B&W kit last Thursday from Gunns. I developed a film on Friday and it turned out o.k. However when I developed a 2nd film last night the film was a weird colour. It was a Blue/grey colour. I didn't have the opportunity to print from the negatives yet, but it doesn't look good at the moment! Any ideas what have could gone wrong? The leader from the film which I cut off was the virtually the same colour as the finished negative. The negatives look o.k. accept for the weird colour around them!

Hi Liam,

if the film isn't as clear as you like and it has a colour cast you probably didn't fix it long enough. If you still have the leader you cut off, put it in the fixer you used and see how long time it takes for the "milky" part to totally disappear. Your fixing time should have been twice that long. After fixing the colour cast may still remain but if you wash the film briefly and then submerge it in HCA for a couple of minutes the colour cast will go away more easily.

Might be insufficient fixing or washing. It is hard to overfix film, so I would start with a complete refix, then a thorough rinse in some sort of hypo clearing agent, then a 5 to 10 minute wash.

If this doesn't work, it would be helpful to have more information on the developer and fix used, and the exact procedure you followed.

Although both answers above could be correct, it would help to know which film, developer and fix you used. Also, how long did you develop and fix the film?

Some films do have a blue-green-gray base color. Acros is one that comes to mind. What film are you using?

Yes, I forgot to mention that you also have to wash it thoroughly, even after HCA.

Thanks very much for all your advice....I had the wrong dilution strength for my Fixer. The film turned out grand the second time. Liam
