Top 10

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Given that Star Wars made it as No.1 in Ch4's Top 100 Films ever for all time greatest ever etc, I find myself copying inspired to ask for a Toon Top 10 greatest goals / incidents for all time ever etc. It could go to a Top 100 if anyone can be bothered to search out 100 greatest moments...perhaps that might be tricky during the last few years. Also, perhaps it should be limited to our post-war record, 'cos how many can recall our Edwardian dominance?

Nominations please...

My own thoughts being (no particular order):

Fairs Cup win
Beardsley's goal vs Brighton
Ginola's goal vs Ferencvros (sp?)
Signing Shearer for a world record fee
5-0
This season's 4-3 over ManUre
Div 1 victory parade
Rob Lee's Wembley goal
Tino's hattrick vs Barca
Ketsy's goal vs Zagreb to take us into Europe
Shearer's goal vs Villa this season

All of these are from the last 12 years are so. In no particular order

7-1 v Leicester
Lee's goal at Wembley
Signing Shearer
5-0
Tino's hatrick
Steve Watson scoring against Port Vale for the first away win in 5 months
Beating Spurs in the semi
Keegan coming home
Kevin Brock playing the second half in goal against Birmingham in the promotion season (we won 3-2)

Sorry if it looks like I've copied half your answers

* The '55 FAC Final victory - the first game I can recall, watched on a flickering b&w telly in a packed front room at my Grandfather's house.
* The 5-0 win over Feyenoord in our very first European game in '68(?)
* The '69 Fairs Cup win - especially Wyn Davies' performances.
* Supermac's debut hat trick at SJP against Liverpool
* The '74 FAC Semi-Final victory over Burnley at Hillsborough - especially Terry Hibbit's long ball setting Supermac away for the clincher.
* one of Tony Green's supreme performances at SJP. I think it was against Stoke, and that we won 3-2 (anyone confirm that?).
* David Kelly's goal that kept us in Div 1 in KK's first season (against Portsmouth?)
* the 7-1 against Leicester in the final home game of KK's promotion season
* the 5-0
* Shearer's hat trick v Leicester when we came from behind to win (4- 3?)
* the 3-2 over Barcelona and Tino's magical hat trick
* Rob Lee's goal at Wembley against Chelsea (curiously popular choice this isn't it?)

I think that's 12, approximately in date order - hope you'll forgive me for having excess memories of very few real successes.

Clarky, with regards to Robert Lee's goal. I have never felt so much joy when a goal has been scored. Nothing I have seen or experienced at a football match is comparable. Ecstatic would be an understatement.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Yep, me too Kegsy - and suspect Bobby (Dooley, that is) also feels the same.

I possibly got more pleasure out of that one that any of the others I listed. This was down to years of frustration, the fact that in that particular game we were in the ascendency, and had the feeling that that goal was the big turning point in our fortunes and we would finally go on to win at Wembley. Wasn't to be, of course.

Some of these might make the top 100, I remember everything you've mentioned so far. If Roger Tames wasn't such an ars*hole there would be a TTTV documentary about Tony Green. I think he only played 15 or so times at SJP

KK's debut goal at the Gallowgate against QPR
Toon 2 Arsenal 0 couple of years back. Daveed gave the finest performance I've ever seen by a player in B&W
Andy Cole's hattrick against Big Fat Ron's Villa when he broke wee Hughies 40 goal a season record
Big Al's debut freekick against the Wombles
Sir Les' first goal - a header at Bolton from a cross by Ginola - what a Goal
When the match was called of at half time against Wrexham because it was p*ssing doon many moons ago. I think this is still the lowest crowd in Newcastle's history and I was there
The return of the team in 74 after losing at Wemberly, fecking thoosands turned up
Peter's hattrick against the Mackums
When Rob Lee lifted the magnificent beautiful silver cup above his head in the . . .erm, . . . err Dublin (pre-season) Cup.

A few personal favourites of mine, off the top of my head, that wouldn't necessarily make my top 10 moments if I thought long and hard about it, but which I remember fondly : - at 3-0 up against Bilbao seeing Keegan and McDermott off the bench waving everyone forward. Yes we lost the tie but I remember thinking at the time that that was how I wanted to see football played. We had a manager and a team that wanted to do things in style or not at all.

- Don't recall the game, but Philipe Albert galloped down the wing, whipped in a cross which Darren Peacock headed over the bar. Thought it was awesome that our centre backs were throwing themselves into attack.

- Philipe Albert against Man United - speaks for itself.

- John Burridge's penalty save at Roker Park in the play off game. Obviously the second leg is up there with my worst memories, but that moment (and subsequent red card for Hardyman I think) was as good as it gets.

- Asprilla's hat-trick against Barcelona

- Beardsley's hat-trick against the mackems

- Mark McGhee scoring against Leicester at SJP in a 5-4 thriller (Roy Aitken's first game I believe). Looking up from my celebrations to see my 9 year old brother (who I'd sworn to look after as I was taking to his first game) dancing around the corner flag with a couple of other kids from the paddocks.

- KK's first game.

- Wembley way before the Charity Shield

- Mirandinha scoring at Anfield and winding up the scousers something rotten.

Don't know about you lot, but numerically I would say the bad times outweigh the good. In terms of quality though, the good times more than make up for the bad. Missing out on the title was awful, but the dream was worth it. Being relegated was even worse, but how cool for the promotion seasons? (apologies to the older bbs-ers, but I can only remember the last 2!). And going out until 3am on a Sunday night to watch us get thrashed of West Ham is more than eclipsed by a dozen of us getting together to watch a delayed broadcast of us thrashing Aston Villa. Not a bad life being a Newcastle supporter, is it????

Doh! '55 was before my time

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

...... I was only 8 Heed, and don't really remember the game - only about 40 large people in a fairly small room going absolutely nuts when Wor Jackie scored!

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Clarky - yer right about Rob Lee's Wembley goal...don't mind admiting I was very moved indeed. What could have been on that day...

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

HA HA! Not many nominations there before 1992 eh? HA HA!

Well if you didnt see them happen, you cant vote for them i suppose!

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Bearsley's goal against Brighton
5-0 - against Man City, not Utd. Beardsley hattrick?
5-0 - Utd, not City
er...
If you just restrict it to goals:
Beardsley v Brighton
Ginola v Man U
Ginola v Ferencvaros
Albert v Man U
Shearer v Villa
Batty v Blackburn

1-1 draw against West ham with Ossie in charge- we drew 1-1 but we tore them apart with a bunch of kids playing football on the ground such a relief after smith's rubbish.

Getting beat 3-0 at QPR when the team had the flu and singing for the whole match. A deciding factor in Sir Les joining us

Getting beat 3-0 at Notts County in the pouring rain and watching the NC full back beat three men before tapping it into the net

Watching us lose to wimbledon again under KDs reign and turning to my brother at HT and saying this is the worst I've ever seen them play and the bloke in front saying you should have seen them last week

Beardley's goal at Crystal palace in the last minute to win 1-0 in London after I had shouted for gods sake Beardsley get forward and he did.

Drawing 1-1 with Chelsea in the cup thanks to a last minute strike by Les and thinking we'll beat them in the replay ha ha

Tino's first game against boro when he transformed the game with that turn near the bye line

Mirandihna juggling the ball at the corner flag before the game. I nearly walked out cos it was better than anything in the game and I knew it would be.

Booby lees goal against Chelsea. A great reminder of a great Toon hero and a goal that released such an amount of pent up frustration that i screamed out gettin silencing the whole London pub I was in and had to pick up my seat which was carthwheeling across the pub

The first twenty minutes against Man U when we lost 1-0 at SJP 95-96 I really thought this is it we are going to win the league until Cantona did his stuff and it all fell apart.

LOts of them are defeats but I enjoyed every one as the best moments are often the saddest

toughy.... no particular order

Wyn Davies knocking out Mel Blyth :-)
Taking my kids to their first game (Ferencvaros!)
Rob Lee's goal at Wembley... I'll admit to shedding a tear. It was as if all the bad things that have happened in my life had been wiped away.... 2 minutes of bliss!
Standing in the Gallowgate sucking that Keegan shot into the QPR net!
Standing in the Gallowgate any time... even when losing. It's the people, not the game.
Beardsley's winner away at Spurs
SuperMac's hattrick vs Liverpool
5-0 though I have to say I was still nervous at 3-0
Getting rid of Lord Westwood
Getting rid of McKeag

bake, that W. Ham game... I remember the whole away end bouncing for the first 45 mins in the wooden stand giving it "Ossie Ardilels black and white army"... was that the one?

... and how could I forget Tino... so many good times

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

...cont:
Ferguson v Man U
Keegan v QPR
Lee @ Wembley
Waddle v Spurs (?)in the silver and grey...

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

The look on Schmeichels face as Albert chipped him from about 25 yards out. Priceless.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

The lads returning (empty handed) from Wembley (again) in 1976 and going to SJP to welcome them back with my Dad. First time at SJP and start of beautiful relationship.

V Ipswich (77/78 season I think). First game without my Dad! Stood in Gallowgate with mates for first time. We lost I think.

Seeing Gazza play. No specifics cos I can't remember but thinking we've got someone special.

O Brien's freekick at Roker Park.

Shearer's scrambled goal against Sheff Utd at OT. Finally getting to a cup final. I couldn't believe it.

7-1 v Leicster in the promotion season and generally winning the league.

Signing Shearer

5-0 v Man U

Tino's hat trick v Barca

Rob Lee's goal at Wembley. Magical moment.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Off the top of my head....

Lee's goal at Wembley
4-3 v ManU
6-1 v Spurs
Spurs semi
Shearer's goal v Villa
Ferguson's goal v ManU
Blackburn FAC 4th round 2000
Bellamy's goals v Villa
Leicester away Dec 99 (not one of our best games, but we won and the craic in the away end was brilliant!)

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Have to admit, the best feeling in the world was when Rob Lee put that header in against Chelsea. I really thought that was our big moment.

Nothing really compares with that one for me (not old enough to remember the stuff in the 80's)

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Anyone remember a baby-faced Gazza floating a magnificent 30 yarder (at least!) into the top corner against Palace in the cup? Time seemed to stand still while the ball was in the air & there was one of those classic pauses after the ball hit the net before everyone went mental.

Or Kenny Wharton sitting on the ball against Luton?

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Haven't got time for all 10 but I'll do a top 3.

1) Don't remember the game (it was in Europe) but Batty slid in for a tackle and while his head was against the turf, the oposition player gave him the biggest punch in the head I've ever seen. Slammed his head between knuckle and grass - must have left a crater. Batty just got up, frowned, looked a tad confused, and continued as if nothing had happened.

2) 3-4 Liverpool (the first one).

3) The best of all was Alberts goal against MANUre. 5-0. Poetic justice after Beckham lobbed our keeper in the charity shield. But that was only 4-0 wasn't it?

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Aye, remember 'em both fondly, Al. In fact I considered including including that goal of Gazza's in my top 12(!)
I remember the Luton players being distinctly dischuffed at Wharton for taking the wee-wee out of them - it was 5-0 that day, I think.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Thought is was 4 Clarky, but it's a LONG time ago!!! As for Gazza, I'll remember that goal (Alzheimers allowing!) til the day I die. Still the most talented player I've ever seen in a B&W (or England for that matter) shirt.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2001

Aye geordie that was the one. I just remember a ball played into Quinns feet and him providing a perfect lay off to Steve Watson along the ground and me thinking Jeez I didn't know Quinny knew how to do that.

The Mag report of the game said something like the start of a new era and it truly was. No more Kick and rush, just good passing to feet and good movement off the ball.

The best chant was "there's only one Stevie Watson" which was met by a resounding Who from the raving Irons fans.

Happy days

Beardsley's winning goal about 30 seconds from the end at White Hart Lane about 8 years ago - he dribbled past the entire Spurs defence.

Frank Clark scoring his first ever goal after about 300 games against Doncaster in the League Cup.

Rob Lee at Wembley.

Hearing about the Shearer signing when in a pub in Leicester!

Beardsley's goal against Portsmouth when he put it in from about a yard with defenders on their arses all round him.

Ginola's goal against Ferencvaros

Stevie Watson's winner at Anfield in the League Cup

Supermac's two semi-final goals against Burnley

Alan Gowling's League Cup final goal and the reaction in produced in the so-called neutral area where I was sitting!!

3-0 win at West Brom in the '74 cup run with 15,000 Geordies singing non-stop

Blackburn away 1982-83 - second match of the season and first time I saw Keegan in black and white. I remember a Blackburn fan informing me that their number 7 (Brotherson) was better than ours. I pointed out that I was sure that they had treble their average crowd just because Brotherson was playing!!

Burridge penalty save in play-off at Roker. Not at the match but watched the live feed back at Whitley Bay Ice Rink and was part of the Rink invasion which followed!!

5-0 against Man U and all their fans buggering off after an hour!

I'm sure there are loads more - it's hard to pick really.
