It looks as though a deal has been done. Press Conference in an hour to reveal the details.

Yes...bring on Charlton!

Ananova doesn't add much but:

The different sides in the dispute over television money have called a news conference where it is expected to be announced that the players' strike has been averted.

Although no final deal has been publicised, it is believed an announcement that a general settlement has been achieved will be made at the conference.

The conference was taking place at the Hilton Hotel, Manchester Airport.

No figures are known and although the Professional Footballers' Association first announced that the dispute had been resolved, it is understood the final details of the agreement still have to be rubber- stamped.

Well...almost off. Latest:

The warring parties in the players' strike were today close to resolving the dispute. The Professional Footballers' Association even went as far as to announce on their official website that the dispute had been resolved, but later a spokesman said that a final agreement was yet to be reached. That was confirmed by the Premier League, though it is understood the gap between the sides is so close that a deal should be finalised today. A PFA official said a news conference would be held at the Hilton Hotel, Manchester Airport, although a specific time has not been announced. Both the union and Premier League have indicated that there has been significant progress, although the PFA clearly jumped the gun with their initial announcement.

Official agreement confirmed at press conference. Gordon Taylor looked knackered but said:

"I'm really pleased that Newcastle can now stuff Charlton and break their London jinx."

OK, I made that bit up.

Did you notice how Taylor never once praised the FA? He seemed to say that the PFA were great and generally boasted about how they'd got some more money.

Interesting bit on Sky Sports - the French, Italian and Spanish equivalent of the PFA gets £1.4-£1.6m per year. Nowt like this £17.5m the English one gets. Granted, the TV money isn't as large in magnitude, but surely it doesn't cost 15 times more than European equivalents to run the PFA?

My prediction for a headline next season: "PFA splash out on £32m Van Gogh painting"

of course it could be that Taylor will need a large increase in his £500K per annum + expenses package as he has done such a wonderful job... for the good of football (choke!)

To be fair to Taylor, you could argue that he has justified his salary several times over by negotiating a massive cash increase for his members. I would imagine if you were on of his union members you'd be over the moon with the result, especially as the strike was averted as well.

Bobby's interview on the Premiership mentioned the trip to Charlton and he joked he wasn't going, he was going to Hawaii and would wait to see if we'd get a result.

LOL! It'd probably be far more relaxing. Maybe we should all go to Hawaii next Saturday. :-)

Last season the PFA spent less than £6m on what they are about (ie injuries, helping players out etc)

They received £8m from the FA

Now, with over £17m every season, where will this money go?

Pure greed, that's all I can see it is. Surely the clubs should get the most money as they pay the players. Then the players can pay the PFA a percentage of their wage, it's simple, but obviously too far fetched for the PFA - the richest union in the world
