Danny (and anyone interested),

Yesterday was my birthday... and I got a nice BD present! (I look happy, I think!) Being born during Deer Season has special consequences.... whem Mom was in the hospital with me when I was born and they told her we could go home... nobody would come and get us as they were all out hunting.... :-)

Here's a link for anyone interested

Good Job, Robin!!!!!!!!

That's a nice animal.

And before anyone decides to complain, let's attach a scripture to this picture:

"Every moving thing that liveth, I give unto you as meat" Gen. 9:3

A deer thread and no sign of Danny?

Did anyone notice the deer was sticking his tongue out?

They invariably do that after they have been shot dead.

Little late for them to cop an attitude, now isn't it?

And by the way, if anyone needs to get rid of any deer meat ... YUM!

Robin,

Good looking deer, but the guy with him was a little scary looking:)

Now really......was that you??

Yep, it is really me! I wondered when someone would comment on my looks... :-) It is weird sometimes to see a picture of someone after 'talking' with them many months. And I'm sure you all thought I was much older and wiser looking... based on my input!! :-) (Today was the last day of the season... and the beard is gone....)

Well Robin,

I coulda taken a "shot" at you, but hey - I know what one tends to look like after some time in the bush.

Here is the link to that....

Anyway....we still got another week of gun....two weeks of muzzleloader....and two weeks of bow....so who knows.

Congrats again.....and too bad I don't live closer. I know a great taxidermist!!!

Danny,

Good to hear from you!! I thought maybe you hung up the weapons.... :-) Speaking of weapons, my choice was a little Marlin 30-30... I love them for brushy hunting.

You are right on with the 140 guestimate... my brother scored it a 144. It is only about a 16 inch spread, but nice mass and high, even tines. I'm thinking of doing a 'skull mount' (my brother has a couple and I like the 'look')... but I have yet to convince Lisa to let me boil the head on the kitchen stove... so... am going to have to come up with another arrangement!! (Maybe I can find a BIG colony of carrion beetles??)

Weather here was awful, also. High temperature on opening day (Nov. 17th) was around 70!! And, we had terrible FOG on opening morning... my brother couldn't see anything until about 10:30!! Everybody out just sat around in the warmth... and the deer didn't move!! The state-wide kill is going to be down about 25% or so.

Take care and God Bless your hunting!

Robin...

And they say the .30-.30 is antiquated!?!?!?

Speaking of Marlin....I just ordered a Marlin 1895P in a .44 Rem. mag. Only 5 3/4 lbs!!! I bought it primarily for my bear hunt next September (I'm going back)....plus....there are a lot of folks who have a lot of good things to say about it as far as a deer caliber for 125 yards and under....(which you and I know the vast majority of deer are shot well under 100 yards). I'm going to top it with a low power variable in the 1.5 to 5 or 6 range. Should be just a plain, all round, fun, economical...and efficient gun.

As per the 25% reduction in harvest there in Wisconsin....I have no doubt that will be the trend nationwide. Just got a report over the wires from Colorado that the elk harvest will be down some 40,000 animals.

A lot of folks think that will translate in to great hunting next year. Not necessarily. If a habit is at or already over its carrying capacity....the results could be tragic.

One thing about it...(the weather)....you sure can't do anything about it.

As per the skull mount....I do artificial skull mounts. All I use is the skull plate and attach to an artificial skull put out by a number of taxidermy supply houses. The result is a great looking mount...that also tends to last a great deal longer.

Here's what it looks like.....

If you would want to ship me the horns....I'd be glad to do you one.

Nice buck Robin,

You were right about the terrible weather and the fog... I was back to Wisconsin for hunting... I missed a nice buck about 8:30 Saturday morning. He was in tall weeds and the fog was so thick I could barely even see Him and perhaps I was a little rusty on my shooting:)

BTW... that was the last deer I saw the whole week... oh, well life goes on... I think:)
