Encoding... is a PIV better?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi there, I capture AVIs using MAtrox RT2000 and adode primiere. My system is PIII 800 MHz with 256 MB RAM (40 gb IDE). I publish on VCDs as a result of which i have to encode the AVIs to MPEGs. Now i am thinking of upgrading to PIV 1.5 GHZ or higher, so that the encoding takes lesser time. Can anyone tell me if this encoding is CPU intensive and will upgrading make any difference to the time taken for encoding. Does it depend in anyway on Hard disk Data transfer rate? Thanks...

Yes s/w encoding is VERY processor intensive and the faster your processor is the better. Much better if you can get dual-processor systems but I don't think P4 has them yet, also if you stick to RDRAM systems (i850 chipset boards) instead of conventional SDRAM (i845 chipset boards). I upgraded from P3 1GHz to P4 1.7GHz and on the average encoding times became 30-40% faster.
