Dyer's Return

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

According to The Journal this morning YKD returns to full-time training on Monday. The Club are apparently targeting the Charlton game for his comeback, if everything goes well.

He himself hasn't given up hope of playing against Ipswich in the WC on the 27th. Given the team's recent performances, there seems a touch of arrogance in this "pick my game" approach. Having not played since February, I don't suppose playing in a Reserve game or two might actually be fleetingly considered?

And I wonder which rag'll be the first to come up with'It's a hangover from Spain' as Dyer's reason for him not being picked.

More to the point who makes way for him????

-- Anonymous, November 17, 2001

Well we'll still be a better team with him IN the side than out although I agree who makes way?

Bobby and Dyer continually talk about him playing in the centre of midfield: I can't see this working to be honest. Solano, Robert and Dyer in the same midfield?

Clarky, just remind me of how many reserve games Alan Shearer played in, having basically been out since last December...:0)

He played in one I think Dougal, some friendly against Hartlepool.

Strictly it isn't a reserve game, but it's not a first team game.

I'm prepared to see how it goes with Dyer in centre midfield. If it works, it works, if it doesn't then we can have a look again.

One thing for certain is that we will scare the life out of defences. To be fair, neither of Speed and Lee would cause any underpantal stainage, but with Dyer running at the defence and Bellamy running past it, with Shearer as a strategic foil, we really could hammer a team if they all hit form together.

Maybe we would be weaker as a midfield, but we have done pretty well with Acuna in midfield, who doesn't seem to tackle at all (except in our own penalty area of course). Surely it's better to have someone running at defences than it is to have someone trying to get the ball back because they can't run at defences?

Sorry, Paul, I'd forgotten the closed-door affair and Shearer ;)

You may be right about Dyer in the middle and it would be some spectacle to see Robert, Dyer and Bellamy on the same pitch. On the other hand, we have moaned consistently about our midfield being one of the main reasons our defence always looks so vulnerable and I think we'd have to accept clean sheets as a thing of the past (although they'd have to get near us first..).

What may well happen is that Bobby will stick with whoever is in possession between Bellamy and Dyer and use the other one as a sub. That would scare a few opposition defences, too.

It's interesting for Dyer because he is being hailed as England's great left wing hope...I can't see a slot for him anywhere else (although he's more convincing up front that most of the forward options).

Agree about Dyer up front, he is better than a lot of them, but Owen is too similar - and better than him - so left wing is the only option for him (unless Beckham moved to centre midfield and Dyer went on the right.

We wouldn't play two Michael Owens as they would contradict each other in their play. So, Dyer would only be an Owen replacement if he got injured, not really a partner for him.

You are probably right but Dyer is probably the most credible alternative to Owen (as we can't count on Owen's hamstring holding out for the entire competition)..I don't expect anyone will see that, though, and we'll fanny around with Andy Cole or Robbie Fowler if Owen is injured. Does anyone really think Dyer is the answer on the left?

Only Robert or Given would keep him out of the team in their position.

He's the best centre/ right midfielder at the club, possibly the best forward & the best right back we have. Of course he can pick his game.

Dave, you are joking, I take it? Best right back? I think most people on here could defend better. Best right midfielder very possibly and he certainly hit some form playing at the front last year, but best right back?

OK Ok, right Wing back then bah. All I'm saying is if Bobby can't find a place for him in this team there is something wrong

-- Anonymous, November 17, 2001

Agree with you there, Dave, and nee mistake.

From the sounds of today's performance, Bobby is spoilt for choice on who can be replaced by Dyer. ;-)

We lost because we are lacking a number of key qualities. Sadly, Dyer does not posses these qualities either. I'm talking about leadership, forcing the pace of a game, dominating midfield, tackling, etc. We need a Matt Holland sort.

Aside from the CM we all crave, I am convinced that the single biggest improvement that could be made would be for somebody to open their gobs and really get things going. I had hoped that the waning influence of the Blue Chip Brigade would give the younger players more confidence to stamp their authority on the game but it isn't happening. Hughes and O'Brien are both tipped as potential club captains and neither one of them opens their gob. Shay speaksa fter we've conceded a goal. Bellamy, Speed and Shearer speak only to mouth off at the referee and the rest are just not options.
