Ohio Aussie/mix "Death Row Dogs" Available from prison

11/17/01 Four Aussie/mix dogs(six months old) are available for adoption. These dogs have been through a very good training program through Mansfield Correctional Institue (penitentiary) in Mansfield, Ohio. In this program promising "Death Row Dogs" (pups that were destined to be euthanized) are paired up with approved Inmates to be raised and trained. I've been told that dogs who have been through this program are very desirable to own having been well schooled, socialized, etc. My vet told me about the dogs. She donated the pups to the program after she rescued their pregnant mom. I think the fee for adopting one of the Aussie mix pups is quite reasonable. I would surely think they are spayed and nuetered. There are other dogs available also. If anyone is interested in more details call: (419) 526-2000, extension 2023. Neat program, Renee. Thanks for telling everyone about it. If you go there to pick up a pup you'll be struck by two things there. It's a truly state of the art facility with many fine amenities that fuel debate over how well convicts are treated (the proposed Olympic pool was scratched from the plans after much public outcry). The other thing is the old, Gothic administration building. It's the only one of that style left from the complete renovation of the prison years ago. All of the buildings used to be in that style. If anyone has seen the movie 'Shawshank Redemption' you've seen that building. Mansfield was the setting for all of the outdoor prison scenes in the movie.

Gary, I've never visited anyone at the prison. I do drive past the old building everytime I drive to Mansfield to do shopping. They give tours and someday I would like to go inside! The whole Richland/ashland county was a buzz when the movie was made. LOTS of locals were hired as extras! Blessings, Renee

Think carefully about adopting Aussie mix dogs. They need something to do or they will find something to do. They are herding dogs and the instinct is deep. They are also overly protective of the master. Mine was herding my sisters horses to keep them away from me. On the whole if you have an animal operation and need a working dog get one you'll never be happier, if you're looking for a house pet, think twice, aussies can be extremely trying.

I have an Australian Shepherd and an Aussie Mix. GREAT dogs. I agree they need lot of excercise. They aren't apartment dogs. Renee
