OK; I have given up pondering the meaning of life and moved to something more complex and more important!

Gasoline prices. How do they set them. Yesterday, unleaded regular reached 97 and 9/gallon here. This morning they had increased to 1.08 and 9/gallon. An overnight rise of 11 cents. Something must have happened and no one told me. ;o).

In my opinion, they use a random number generator with limits. Maybe someone here can explain it.

Best Wishes,,,,

Hey Z, good morning. I'm not sure why, but gasoline has dropped to a low of around 1.30, probably high to you, but the lowest I've seen it here for over two years I think. I filled up my tank for $20 woohoo! I'z thankful for the little things. =)

p.s. I'd figured that this "war" would send prices skyrocketing. I'm very surprised.

How do they set them? "They"?

I think it's called a market. You know, supply and demand. Demand is down. Despite OPEC rhetoric, supply is still there. The oil producers need their customers. A wild card is the potential oil/gas from Russia.

Yes, that must be it. Putin and Bush are maneuvering to corner the energy market.

Lars:

There must be a "they". All of the prices went up 11 cents overnight. Makes no difference what the brand was.

As you point out Demand is down, so the prices increase by more than 10%. Doesn't make any market sense to me.

Maybe you can splain it to me.

Best Wishes,,,,

As far as the 'market' goes, prices yesterday dropped $2.29 a barrel to $17.45. That's the lowest level in 2 years. The reason: Russia said no to OPEC's challenge to cut production.

We went to 97.9 for a couple of weeks, then jumped overnight to 1.06, nothing in the news.

I think we're somewhere around $1.16 or less for the cheap stuff. I don't pay much attention. I just drive in, say, "$10.00 on pump 5", and I get what I get. I had to laugh at my daughter, however. On driving her home from the airport after a whole month and a half in California, she said, "Gee...gas is high here." Um, Honey, it was up to $1.56 when you were living here. She said it had gone down to $.97 where she was staying in California, which just goes to show that $1.00 buys more than 20 minutes using 10-10-220 or whatever it is.

Well, hell. I might as well end this evening with another confession. You might be on to something with the Catholicism thing, JBT. I HATE to buy gas. I know exactly how far my car will go riding on fumes. Heh. Evidently, my daughter's car doesn't have the same standards as mine.

We got her stuff unloaded from my car into her car [which was in our garage], and I told her that her car was out of gas. I used it for a while after she left, but it drove really rough, and I finally wiggled it into the garage. She tried to start it. It wouldn't turn over. She said, "How empty exactly was it?" Uh...I dunno. She needed to go home, and I gave her my car, with the caveat that she come back tonight to take me to the airport to pick up SO. We can use HIS car until we figure out if the only problem with hers is lack of gas, but there goes MORE guilt on my head.

"Gas war" going on here last night and today. Regular unleaded is 92.9.

-- Pammy (pamela_sue57@hotmail.com), November 17, 2001.

$1.19.9/gal as of 11/18/01. Went up a dime a couple of days ago. No rhyme or reason to any of the pricing to me. Has everyone quit posting here?

JBT, the forum was down almost the entire weekend.

-- Pammy (pamela_sue57@hotmail.com), November 19, 2001.

OOH, they dropped it to $1.51 here in OR today. Don't do me any favors ok?

Growlin' at the gas station attendant...

Now it has dropped to 104 and 9 today. Now, I am not suggesting some con-spear-acy. I just wondered if anyone knew the basis of these changes. Don't make any sense from the market indicators that I see. Seems, almost, random. The changes can be quite large. Forecasters, here, are suggesting prices under 90 by Christmas. Although I don't know how you forecast random events. ;o)) My car has been getting over 36 mpg. It is almost embarrasing to fill-up each week.

Best Wishes,,,,
