FA Cup First Round and guess what

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

the papers wheel out Hereford United. In today's Torygraph, we have Ricky George talking about the glory of the FA Cup and how important it is for small clubs. "Imagine what it must feel like to be player or supporter of Whitby Town..win the game and..the next round and they are in the hat with Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United....I have some wonderful memories of the FA Cup...On Monday, Feb 7, 1972, two days after I had scored the winner for Hereford against Newcastle United..." blah blah.

Anyway, does anyone remember that game or did they even go to it?

More to the point, can anyone forget that game? I've been trying for years but the BBC keep wheeling it out.

That says 1972 Screach.... not 1872

I was far too young to travel to that game though I do remember it

If ever there was a need for a burning down of the BBC's Sport Dept archives...

Sorry Geordie. My eyes aren't what they used to be...............but sadly, at my age, I can't remember what they used to be.

I believe "that goal" was scored by Ronnie Raford in the replay at Hereford. In which case, I would certainly have been at the home tie, but can't really remember it. Curiously, I do remember seeing an earlier humiliation, at home to non-league Bedford Town in the 60's.

Thanks Clarky, that's another wound reopened.

Since we are talking about opening wounds how about Exeter City and their version of SJP. What a miserable night/morning that was.

The game was the feature game on MOTD on a Saturday night. My Dad let me stay up and watch it. Newcastle were playing in a red strip, I remember that because my dad said: "Fuckin red!", that was the first time I'd ever heard him swear. The air turned blue a canny few more times by the end of the highlights.

As I always say, you have to be a GIANT to be giant-killed. And we must be the biggest giants in the history of the world the number of times THAT match has been shown on telly.

The only reason it isn't Yeovil v Sunderland is because MOTD wasn't invented then!
