Drums in the Bible

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Christian Church : One Thread

This is a musical question, but is not part of the instrument/non-instrument issue.

I know of a dear sweet lady who believes that drums are intrisically evil because of the beat. Does anyone know of anywhere in Scripture where drums were used (I cant find any) and how would you respond to her or her line of reasoning?

Scott,

Offhand, I don't know of anywhere where drums are mentioned. You asked, how would you respond to her or her line of reasoning? What is her reasoning? Does she have anything she uses to back up her claim?

Only that the beat is intrinsically evil. She mentioned that the Churches in Africa refuse to allow drums because "they know how evil it is."

The drum issue in Africa sounds just like the Meat issue Paul dealt with. Those coming from a pagan religion tend to go 180 degrees away from anything in their past (regardless of what the Bible says or doesn't say) in order to prevent backsliding into their old ways (which, under those circumstances might not be such a bad idea).

But her use of that argument has no bearing on her unless she has had a past history of evil that revolved around raucous music.

Steering clear from the whole "Authorization" argument for now, drums would be one of those "liberty" things Paul speaks of in Romans and should be dealt with in that way.....i.e. not being a stumbling block to a weaker brother or sister. Just another issue the church leadership will have to prayerfully consider.

I haven't found any specific mention of drums, but there are percussion instruments mentioned frequently -- such as cymbals.

That was only supposed to be cymbolic.

Careful Duane ... humor like that will only get you into trouble!

Funny you said that. Right after posting that silly remark, I tripped, bumped my head and got a percussion.
