What is my marriage status?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I am a confirmed catholic who would like to come back to the church. I have been married for 20 years and have 3 children. My husband was married previously, he has not been in contact with his ex-wife and has no idea where she is. He is not sure if he was baptised, his parents are dead. He is pretty sure his ex-wife was not baptised but cannot confirm it. They were married by a unitarian minister. Do I have a chance of getting my marriage blessed? Do we have to find his ex-wife?

Yes, you certainly "have a chance," Diana.
Welcome back home. I returned in 1984. There is a huge gang of us "reverts" in the world.
Please go and visit the pastor of your local Catholic parish and explain everything to him. Almost certainly he will know what to do and will be very pleased to help you.
Most likely, a procedure to determine whether or not the old marriage was valid or null will have to be undertaken. In this procedure, a good faith effort will be made to contact the other woman. If she cannot be found, the procedure will continue without her.

God bless you.
John
