O'Brien on the bench. Opinionated text commentary on sports.com says Iran is playing like Boy Scouts.

If anyone is interested updates by the minute on sportinglife.com then follow links to football and the match is displayed.

I would put the link up in LTHM but I get my )><( confused!

Sounds like Shay hasn't had much to do yet.

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

and Given in goal of course!

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

Maybe just as well O'Brien stays on the bench. Iran are fouling like crazy.

Sometimes sports.com can be amusing, "I had visions of a thriller. How wrong I was."

Last update from me, I'm off to bed!

0 - 0, 30 minute mark

Goodnight, Gus! Sounds like you won't be missing much from this one. ;-)

According to soccernet: Given came out on safari to claim a cross. clear

Whatever that means

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

I didn't know they had safaris in Iran. Ya learn something new every day. ;-)

This text commentary is more stressful than listening or watching. I'll have no nails left to chew off during our game on Saturday at this rate.

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

What's worse is I swear the sports.com commentator leaves for the loo at 42 and 87 min of every game. Updates are fairly regular, but then nothing for at least 5min at those points. argh.

Well I have to go to bed so I can get up and have another bad day - I'm going for three in a row - is that a record?

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

Oh dear. Well I hope that's a record you dont set. But if you do, it's Friday, so you can get drunk afterwards. ;-)

According to a report i read this morning Tehran is a very friendly place. Funnily enough the street which has the uk embassy on is named after the IRA hunger strike guy!

Doh!

Brilliant double save from Shay after fifty odd mins in second half. Bazza Davies on live BBC2 coverage reckons he could be in line for another man of the match.

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

Shay performing 'heroics' apparently.

sports.com are slobbering all over themselves now, calling him 'the consummate keeper'

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

From the sounds of things there's no other choice but Given as MOTM. He's definitely kept Ireland in it. :-)

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

Iran score just into second minute of two mins stoppage time. Final score: 1-0. Good luck to the Irish!

I tink Oi'll go and waar chit.

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *boogie* :-D

Now I just pray England, Ireland and the US get drawn in seperate groups for the first round so I don't face painful decisions over who to support. ;-)

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

Don't worry, Ciara, unless they get drawn together, they'll almost certainly all go out in the group stages ;)

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

World Cup Draw in Japan is 10am UK time Sat Dec 1.

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

Fecking wonderful! When the draw was made two years ago I thought oh no! the Dutch and the Portugese. Then I thought Iran and 120,000 fans oh no! However, Far East here we come singing a soldier's song.

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

LOL, Dougal. I've no doubt Ireland will go out in the first round. They're still pretty inconsistent up front without Quinn, and I can't see him last all 3 games in the group stage. I'll be happy to see them win at least 1 game for Shay's sake.

However I'm more confident the US and England will get through the group stage. At least both teams have more realistic potential to get through providing both teams have their first choice players healthy and playing well.

The crowd in Tehran was something like 116,000 apparently - including 88,000 school-kids from Sunderland who had somehow been given free tickets!

-- Anonymous, November 15, 2001

88,000 school kids from Sunderland? Surely you've made a mistake. Shouldn't it be - 88,000 kids of schoolable age from Sunderland?

Police report a 'quiet night' in terms of burglary and car theft...
